Symbol and Motif: What’s the difference? A reoccurring object in literature that figuratively represents another idea or thing and is almost always related to the theme. A reoccurring object in literature that figuratively represents another idea or thing and is almost always related to the theme.

Motifs can appear in different contexts (i.e. water appearing in different ways) or be dynamic Motifs can be reoccurring literary devices

So water in Bless Me, Ultima is a motif, instead of symbol, because of it’s dynamic appearances. The water motif relates to the theme of good vs. evil. Theme Statement: The powers of good and evil are the same
