Effective Qualities of a Team Leader Denise Held April 2016

Effective Qualities of a Team Leader Ten effective qualities of a team leader Breakout groups Top five club challenges Regroup and review Goals and objectives of this session Evaluate and discuss the ten effective qualities of a team leader Breakout into groups and select our team leader who will facilitate the group discussion While using what we have learned about being an effective team leader, each group will tackle one of the top challenges that our clubs are having today. Then we will regroup and each team leader will present their teams ideas and solutions.

Effective Team Leaders An effective team leader has a variety of traits and characteristics that encourage team members to follow her. Team leaders naturally possess certain qualities, such as compassion and integrity. These skills are sometimes acquired through formal training or though experience. The qualities of an effective team leader inspire the trust and respect of the team and stimulate production within our groups or clubs.

Communicate Effective team leaders communicate clearly. Quality verbal and written communication skills allow leaders to present expectations to team members in a way they can understand. Effective communication skills also allow team leaders to listen to the input of others. I believe listening is one of the most important traits of communication. It’s important to understand the dynamics of the team and if you are not listening, you will miss it. Example?

Organize Effective team leaders possess great organizational skills. Organizational skills help team leaders plan objectives and strategies, which allow team members to perform at their best. Organized team leaders put systems in place that maintain order and guide team members toward meeting goals and objectives.

Confident An effective team leader is confident in her abilities, as well as confident in the abilities of her team members. A confident leader is secure in the decisions she makes that affect her team. A self-confident team leader also reassures team members of her authority within the organization. However, I would like to point out there is difference between being confident and being arrogant. Team leaders must ensure their confidence doesn’t spill over into being arrogant. No one likes to interact with and overconfident and arrogant team leader.

Respectful A quality team leader is respectful of her team members. A respectful leader empowers members by encouraging them to offer ideas about decisions that affect them. This lets team members know that the leader respects their input and opinions.

Fair A quality team leader treats team members fairly. She is consistent with rewards and recognition, as well as corrective action. A fair leader ensures all team members receive the same treatment.

Integrity An effective team leader is honest and open with her team members. Leaders who possess integrity gain the trust of team members because she does what she says she will do and treats others the same way she wants to be treated. The Golden Rule! Integrity is doing the right thing consistently.

Influential Influential leaders help inspire the commitment of team members to meet organizational goals and objectives. Influential leaders also help manage change by gaining the confidence of members through effective decision making and communication.

Delegate Effective team leaders know how to share leadership through delegation. Delegating certain tasks to trustworthy team members allows the leader to focus on improving club functions and production.

Facilitate Effective team leaders are great facilitators. As a facilitator, team leaders help members understand their goals. They also help organize an action plan to ensure team members meet their goals and objectives more efficiently.

Negotiate Team leaders utilize negotiation skills to achieve results and reach an understanding in the event of a club conflict. Team leaders who negotiate effectively streamline the decision-making process, as well as solve problems for the best interest of everyone involved.

Effective Team Leadership will shape the future of Soroptimist

Group Breakout Session Traits of effective team leadership 1 Apply Skills 2 Discuss & Solve 3 The next step in this session will be to break out into groups. We all understand the traits of effective team leadership. Now we will apply some of those skills as we discuss and try to solve some of the challenges that our southern region clubs are facing today. Ladies, we can do more working together then we could ever do by ourselves. It takes a village to keep a club together. One of the great take a ways from conference and convention is the wealth of knowledge that you gain by just sharing your everyday challenges. Whether it is finding a new fundraising idea or maybe changing up your club meetings. We don’t have to reinvent the wheel when we can borrow someone else’s ideas. That is one of the awesome things about being a Soroptimist. Sharing and caring!

Traits of Effective Team Leadership Communicate Organize Confident Respectful Fair Integrity Influential Delegate Facilitate Negotiate So lets get into our groups. First thing I would like for the group to do it to elect a team leader. Then I would like that team leader to use the traits that we just learned and facilitate a discussion to solve the problem that your group was given. The team leader must be fair and delegate the note taking to an organized team member who can be the scribe. I will give each group 12 minutes to tackle their problem. Then we will regroup and the team leader, she can if she would like, maybe through negotiating, to have someone be the facilitator for their group and share their thought and their solutions. In addition, I would like for each team leader to share how they used the ten traits in their groups.
