ENGLISH IV- Intro to research

WELCOME BACK!  Do-now: Tell your partner one awesome thing you did over Thanksgiving. Then, correct any mistakes (punctuation, subject-verb agreement, subject-pronoun agreement) in the following sentences. If the sentence is correct, write “correct.” My Thanksgiving was excellent, I got to see my family and eat delicious food. Needs a semicolon: My Thanksgiving was excellent; I got to see my family and eat delicious food. I also was able to see my beautiful nieces and nephews and loved every minute of it. Correct Evelyn, along with her sister Eleanor, were ridiculously cute when trying to ice skate for the first time. Should be “was,” not “were”

Announcements: Half-hour class tomorrow (8-8:30), then you’ll head to the library (meet in Kiva or agora right after class) Check out our school newspaper at crpumapress.com Next journals due Friday, December 12

Tip of the Day: TIP: For quotes used in an essay, try to use stories/examples more often than statistics/numbers/facts. (You may still use stats/numbers, but don’t necessarily quote these). Not bad: Gang members need love, not punishment. Boyle explains that, “Gang members who were given the opportunity for rehabilitation using positive feedback were 70% less likely to end up back in jail” (Boyle 4). Better: Gang members need love not punishment. Not only are gang members 70% less likely to end up back in jail when they are shown love (Boyle 4), but Boyle also explains many stories of homies who respond well to love. He talks about Speedy, saying that, “Speedy had never had a father in his life, but now he…”

Prayer (Carmen) Tues: Jackey

SWBAT: Present information to convey a clear stance on a social issue’s organization’s effectiveness 12.PKI.4.c.E1 Present information, findings, and evidence to convey a distinct perspective in a variety of oral presentations

Finish presentations: Socorro/Mirka Bryan/Yuri Finish presentation feedback sheets– you’ll hand them in after Bryan and Yuri’s presentation

RESEARCH PAPER INFO: WOO HOO! RESEARCH PAPER TIME! The next unit will be devoted to your papers. GENERAL INFO/BASIC REQUIREMENTS: What the research paper is NOT: a summary of all of your sources. What the research paper IS: an ARGUMENT and ANALYSIS of sources. 7-15 pages MLA formatting 5-7 sources Minimum: 2 print Minimum: 1 journal Minimum: 1 primary source. Works cited page.

Deadlines: Next Tuesday, Dec. 9th: Annotated Bibliography and thesis Next Thursday, Dec. 11th: Outline with evidence Thursday, Dec. 18th: Rough Draft Tuesday, Jan. 13th: Final Draft Tues, Jan. 20th: Reflection on assignment

Format: Introduction Define what you will be talking about Can be multiple paragraphs Background What is the issue? Why is it an issue? What is the history of the issue? Different views toward the issue? Recommendations Possible solutions? Which would you advocate? What can we learn from the issue? Why should we even know about it? Conclusion Re-state thesis If your solution is adopted, what will change? If not, what will change? If we do not learn from this issue, what will happen? If we do, how will it help?

Have out a piece of paper: Beginnings of an outline. At the top of your paper, write your research question. E.g. Should America be a country that is in charge of saving other nations in need? Write the heading of “Definitions” after your research question. Ask yourself: Does anything need defining? Write any words that need clarification and explain what you mean E.g.: “saving”– when I refer to “saving another country,” what do I mean? Militarily? Monetarily? Getting them out of debt? E.g.“country in need”-- what do I mean? Countries experiencing genocide? Countries in severe poverty? Who will I be looking at? Note: If you have a specific country or area you’re looking at, you may want to specify WHO you’re talking about– everyone? Just people in poverty? Just the military? Just citizens?

Outline cont’d: Write the heading of “Background Info” Write what background info you MAY need to understand the conflict or issue. E.g. History of America’s decision-making process of how we’ve decided to intervene E.g. One side to the story: We should get involved– bring up Rwandan genocide and how we were reluctant to become involved– ended up in over 800,000 deaths E.g. Other side: Shouldn’t get involved– in Iraq/Afghanistan, we didn’t get anywhere– just wasted money, lives, time E.g. Morality perspective: Should morality play an issue here? What does the Church say on this? E.g. Time and $: Do we have the time and money to invest in this?

Outline cont’d: Write the heading “Recommendations” Write what you think you may want to recommend for going forward and why (How should we view this historical event? How should we act in the future?) E.g. Should intervene in MOST situations Betters our relationships with other countries Basic humanity/morality We have $ and power and influence to help E.g…. But not in EVERY situation When our presence will bring more harm than benefit When no gross human rights violations are occurring.

OUTLINE Cont’d Write the heading “What critics say” and then write any counterclaims We should just worry about ourselves– America has enough problems It costs too much money It harms countries more than helps.

HW: Bring back your outline tomorrow Bring library call numbers tomorrow EXIT: Tell me two things you learned from today’s presentations.
