3 General Rules and Reminders
Outlining General Rules and Reminders

4 Purpose The purpose of outlining is to get all of your ideas organized before you start writing the actual paper. This should help ensure that: your main ideas are clear and connected your arguments are supported with evidence you are writing in logical order

5 Purpose An outline is the structure of the BODY of your paper. Do not outline your introduction or conclusion. Your research question and thesis statement must be at the TOP of your outline. Every part of your outline must connect back to your thesis statement.

6 General Outlining Format
All outlines should have the thesis as the first component. Without the main thesis present, the rest of the outline has little meaning. Introductions and conclusions are not a part of a formal MLA outline You will only outline the BODY of the paper.

7 General Outlining Format
A formal outline has complete sentences for the thesis statement and the topic sentences The other components of the outline should be complete pieces of information, but do not necessarily have to be in sentence structure.

8 The Format, a three-level outline
Heading Research Question Thesis Title I. First Level (body thesis) A. Second Level (general evidence - cited) 1. Third Level (further specific evidence and/or general analysis – ie: analysis – cited if necessary) B. Second Level 1. Third Level 2. Third Level C. Second Level II. First Level A. Second Level Every subordinate level must directly support the level above it.

9 Full Sentence Outlines
At the Roman numeral level of your outline (level one), you will have a full sentence The Roman numeral levels of your outline are your body theses These may or may not correspond to the paragraphs of your paper You may have more paragraphs than Roman numerals this is because some body theses lend themselves to more than one paragraph of information

10 Your body theses must be an argument point
Your body theses must be an argument point. They also must have a DIRECT and CLEAR connection to your thesis. Remember you are outlining the ARGUMENT POINTS of your paper not necessarily the paragraphs of your paper. EACH ROMAN NUMERAL WILL NOT AUTOMATICALLY EQUAL ONE PARAGRAPH.

11 What’s Due – Level Three Outline
You will have a typed three level outline. Include the following in your typed outline: 1) Full MLA Heading, Title, Research Question, Thesis at the top of the outline 2) Level One - Roman Numerals: Body Thesis (a complete sentence and be absolutely sure that this sentence directly relates to your thesis) 3) Level Two - Capital Letters: Think Evidence/Support/Facts (and be absolutely sure that the evidence relates to your body thesis) 4) Level Three – Arabic Numbers: General analysis and/or further more specific evidence Notes: Outlines do not need to be double spaced For all researched information – cite the source in your outline as though you are citing in an essay You may include a works cited page for feedback, this will be a requirement when your final paper is turned in.

Warm Up 2/14 Name 2 similarities between the Aztecs and the Incas.

13 February 14, 2018 Learning Target (I can…):
Take Out: Paragraph Outline Agenda: Peer Editing Rough draft beginnings Skills: Editing and Rough Draft development Learning Target (I can…): Create a rough draft based on my outline Upcoming Dates 2/14: 3 Level Outline (hard copy) 2/15: Rough Draft (hard copy) 2/16: Final draft (Tii and hard copy)

14 Outline Peer Editing – Checked by and your name at the top
Look for the following in your partner’s outline Thesis: Is it place appropriately? Can you identify their what, how, and so what? Are they clear and accurate? Body Thesis Statement: Does it have an argument? Does it connect to at least part of the how in their main thesis? Evidence: Is it related to their BTS? Is it paraphrased and cited correctly? Do they have 2 pieces of evidence? Analysis: Does it connect their evidence to their BTS? Does it connect to their main thesis? (check for the so what) Make sure they are not just restating their evidence in different words. Clarifying or explaining is ok, rewording is just redundant.

15 Creating Your Rough Draft
Look at your feedback Does your thesis need revision? Do you need to adjust your evidence or analysis? Looking at your evidence and analysis, ask yourself: What context does my reader need? What should I include in my intro and what could I use to lead into my evidence? Next you have 2 options

16 Creating Your Rough Draft
Option 1: Begin your intro What interesting fact/story about your civilization could you use to pull in your reader? Do you have a good quote you could integrate to spark interest? Next, give some context, including who, where, and when and whatever other brief bits of information you decided your reader needs.

17 Creating Your Rough Draft
Option 2: Begin your body paragraph Adjust your BTS if needed Is there something you need to tell your reader to lead into your first piece of evidence? Give your evidence (paraphrased in 1-2 sentences depending on length of quote) Now tell me why the heck that matters. What does your evidence tell us about them? How does that prove your so what? Repeat with second piece of evidence.

18 Homework Flesh out your rough draft.
It will be rough! That’s the point. Bring a hard copy for feedback tomorrow.
