1 Unit 3 Day 7– Outlining and Organizing
English IV Unit 3 Day 7– Outlining and Organizing

2 Do-now: Have thesis statements out and the beginnings of the outline that you started last Tuesday out (with your definitions and what you thought your background paragraphs might be about). Then… Switch thesis statements with a partner. Put a box around their counterclaims Circle their argument Underline each claim that supports their argument Write them a sentence or two about whether their thesis is clear and arguable or not. When you finish, write your research question at the top of the butcher paper.

3 Announcements: Journals due next Thursday (12/18)

4 Tip of the Day: Anything need fixing?
She had to choose weather she wanted a hot chocolate or a chai tea latte. *whether, not weather

5 Prayer (ALBERTO V.) Fri: Ms. Stitt, Mon: Angel, Tues: Socorro, Thurs: Alex, Fri: Bryan

6 SWBAT: Organize research into sections for research paper.

7 Outlining/Organizing
Butcher paper = help with organization of notes Finishing early = CHECK IN WITH A PARTNER and get their feedback.

8 ORGANIZE NOTES: Step 1: Determine what you may need to define and clarify in your research paper. Write these on your butcher paper. Step 2: Determine what your audience should know for background information in order to understand the rest of the conflict. Write these on your butcher paper. What is the history of the issue? If you’re doing a lot of history, you may want to break this down even further– how will you determine each paragraph? What events will you include in the history? What is the issue? Why is it an issue? What are the two sides to the issue?

9 Continuing to organize…
Step 3: Determine what you would recommend (Don’t worry—this can change—just put down your ideas for now) Step 4: Brainstorm the reasons why you would recommend these actions. Step 5: For each reason, brainstorm ideas that a critic might say against your reason. What are the counterclaims?

10 INFORMATION GATHERING STEPS:
SAMPLE STICKY NOTE FORMAT: DEFINITION PARAGRAPH: Source: M-W’s dictionary definition To save is… “to stop (someone or something) from dying or being hurt, damaged, or lost” -is this what I mean by “saving”? Or would we have to intervene in EVERY country in every situation if this is what I mean by saving? SAMPLE STICKY NOTE FORMAT: BACKGROUND PARAGRAPH: Source: “America the Savior?” -there was info about different types of intervention -”saving” is military? -”saving” is $? -”saving” is giving aid/providing doctors etc? -this article said that US aid was any kind of TANGIBLE support, and I’ll go with that. INFORMATION GATHERING STEPS: Step 7: Go back to the “introduction.” Look through your notes to determine if you have any information that would help you to define or clarify the words you chose earlier. If you DO have information, write down the source title on a sticky note and make a note to yourself about what that source includes. If you DO NOT have information that you can use, put a BLANK sticky note there to remind you that you need to find information on this source. Step 8: Now look at the “background” section. Look through your notes to determine if you have any information that would provide good information here. Add in sticky notes like you did for Step 7.

11 INFO GATHERING: Step 9: Look at the “recommendations” section. Look through your notes to determine if you have any information that would provide good information here. Add sticky notes Step 10: Look at the “counterclaims” section. Look through your notes to determine if you have any information that would provide good information here.

12 HW: READ YOUR RESEARCH BOOKS AND TAKE NOTES!! You will fall behind if you are not continuing with your research.
