Semi-colon rule #1: Use a semi-colon to connect two independent clauses that are closely related.
*Note: A semi-colon can replace a period if the sentences are closely related.
Example:
Ms. Stitt loves her junior class; they are so kind and such hard workers.
INCORRECT: Ms. Stitt loves her junior class; because they are so kind and such hard workers. (after the semi-colon is a dependent clause)
INCORRECT: Ms. Stitt loves her junior class; she also loves strawberries. (not closely related)

Gatsby loves Daisy; he would do anything to be with her.
Correct!
Tom loves Daisy, too; but he cheats on her.
Incorrect– the second half of the sentence needs to be an independent clause
There is surely going to be a conflict between Tom and Gatsby; Myrtle might also get into a conflict with Tom.
Debatable, but these are not that closely related…

Nick drops by Gatsby’s house to say hi, and is surprised to see that Tom is there (he came along with the Sloane’s who stopped in for a drink at Gatsby’s house). How does Tom feel about Gatsby? (Remember that Tom doesn’t know about Gatsby and Daisy) Explain.
Describe how Tom feels at Gatsby’s party.
Describe how Daisy feels at Gatsby’s party.
What does Gatsby want Daisy to do/say?
Nick claims to Gatsby that you “can’t repeat the past,” and Gatsby says, “Can’t repeat the past? Why of course you can!” Whom do you agree with and why?

Fold a paper in half.
On the front part of the paper, write 1-2 challenge questions and draw a picture to represent your part of the text. Also, write the page numbers.
On the inside of the paper, write a sample strong answer to your question.

You may go to the questions in any order– go to a wall question that doesn’t have any people around it.
