7 SWBAT: Create a strong thesis
Create strong claims for paragraphs (topic sentences)

8 Thesis Statements for Essay:
Two main things to include in thesis: Theme What Miller uses to develop that theme (characterization, plot, conflict)

9 Thesis statements: Characterization: If you’re using characterization, make sure to include WHO you will be focusing on. Sample thesis: The Crucible shows that friendship is the strongest force, developing this theme through the characters Abigail and Mary Warren especially. Conflict: Make sure to include what types of conflict help to develop your theme. Sample thesis: Arthur Miller shows that friendship is the strongest force in his novel The Crucible and develops this theme especially through the conflicts of man v. self and man v. man. Plot: Make sure to include the parts of plot that will help develop your theme. Sample thesis: Friendship is the strongest force in The Crucible, and this is shown through the development of plot, especially in the rising action and the climax of the story.

10 Your Turn: Take 5-8 minutes to create a strong thesis statement.
If you finish early, have your partner revise your statement.

11 Claims: What are they? First sentence of each body paragraph
Spells out what the rest of the paragraph will be about. Intro paragraph Claim Body Paragraphs Claim Conclusion Paragraph

12 Claims: Outline what each of your paragraphs will be about.
Leave space between each on your paper. Sample 1 (using characterization): Body P1: Abby’s personality shows the theme Body P2: Abby’s motivation Body P3: Mary Warren’s motive Sample 2 (using conflict): Body P1: man v. self with Abby against herself shows the theme Body P2: man v. self with John against himself Body P3: man v. society with John against witchcraft Sample 3 (using plot): Body P1: rising action: when Abby stabs herself with needle, this shows the theme Body P2: rising action: when John takes Mary Warren to court Body P3: climax: when John is deciding whether to sign

13 Translate your claims into strong sentences
Translate your claims into strong sentences. These are BAD: Do NOT do these. Body P1: Abigail’s personality: Abigail’s personality of love and kindness helps show how friendship is the strongest force. Body P2: Abigail’s motivation: Abigail’s motivation of treating everyone with love helps show how friendship is the strongest force. Body P3: Mary Warren’s motivation: Mary Warren’s motivation of pleasing everyone shows how friendship is the strongest force. What’s wrong with these?

14 Why are these better? Body P1: Abigail’s personality: Abigail’s personality of love and kindness shows how friendship is the strongest force, as she is the most devoted friend to anyone around her. Body P2: Abigail’s motivation: Because Abby’s only motive is to try and help everyone, it helps the reader to understand how important friendship is in the book. Body P3: Mary Warren’s motivation: Mary Warren also contributes to developing friendships, as she is motivated by a desire to please everyone around her. Take 10 minutes to try and come up with strong claim sentences.

15 Primary Sources: Remember that you need to use at least one primary source document in your essay. We will be looking at more primary source documents that you can potentially use. Group 1: You will be looking at lessons that Puritans had to learn as children. Group 2: You will be looking at diary entries and a letter during the Salem witch trials. You will have to teach another person about what YOU are responsible for, so make sure that you know what you are talking about!

16 HW: Vocab 6 due tomorrow Claim sentences due tomorrow
EXIT: Write your thesis on a piece of paper, and hand it to me on your way out.
