Welcome to First Grade Curriculum Night First Grade Team: Mrs. Brace Ms. Cottman Ms. Jones

How to Help at Home - Reading Encourage your child to sound out unfamiliar words. Practice common sight words. Work on asking them written comprehension questions. You can have them write down their answer and then read it aloud to you. Read 30 minutes a night.

How to Help at Home - Writing Allow them to try and sound out words on their own. We want to make sure they are able to connect the sounds that they hear into writing that same word down. Give them a picture to write/describe. Use a word wall at home for your child to reference while they work.

Math – 1st quarter Write/Count/Read numbers to 120 Addition and Subtraction Skills Solving Word Problems Compare two numbers based on meanings of tens and ones.

Science and S.S. – 1st quarter Rules and how they are needed in the home, school and community. Classifying the roles of authority figures in the home, school, and community. How conflicts can be resolved in the home, school, and community. Explain the importance of push and pull to move an object (force and motion)

Testing: MAP scores - Goals Mean scores BOY MOY EOY Reading 160.7 171.5 177.5 Math 162.4 173.8 180.8 If a student receives a higher mean score than the student norms, they are given a goal to work towards for the year. This ensures to continue the growth process. You will receive a MAP report in your child’s folder as soon as their class finishes MAP testing. You will also see the school score and the district score.

Testing – Explained MAPs Reading 3D (TRC/Dibels) Scores will come home once all students in first grade have finished testing.

Sight Words See list of sight words on the grade level weebly. These words will be the ones used on the Reading 3D assessment. Sight Words

Nonsense Words Please see the list of practice nonsense words on the Weebly. Please remember that students must be able to read the whole word, and must pronounce the vowel in the word as a short vowel, not a long vowel. The end of year goal for nonsense words is 13 whole words read and 58 correct letter sounds.

Top Reasons for Nonsense Words They are part of whole words. For example, the word conference has “con,” “fer,” and “ence” in it Help learning syllables Build confidence with decoding Indication of if the child knows the most common sound of the word

Fluency Tested for Middle and End of the year. Students will be tested on reading fluency (how many words they can read accurately in a minute). The end of year goal for fluency is 47 words per minute.

Reading 3D - TRC The TRC assessment is used to determine each student’s reading level. They will be given a leveled book to read, and must answer 5 oral questions and 2 written comprehension questions. For written comprehension, the students must score a 2 or a 3 on both in order to pass the written comprehension part of the assessment.

Written Comprehension The following written comprehension responses are based on the book “Bonk’s New Bike.” This book can be found on readinga-z.com under level J as well as under your child’s Raz-kids account. There are three reading responses for the book to show what a score of 1, 2, and 3 looks like for written comprehension.

Problem Bonk had a dog How was the problem solved? Bonk got a bike This written comprehension response would be scored as a 1. There are no details and does not really explain what the problem and solution is based on the story.

Problem Bonk needed money. How was the problem solved? He walked dogs for money with his friends. This written comprehension response would be given a 2. The response tells the problem and solution of the story, but it lacks detail.

Problem Bonk needed money so he could buy a new bike. Bonk had a hard time walking all the dogs. How was the problem solved? Bonk started a dog walking business so he could earn the money on his own to buy the bike. Bonk was having a hard time walking all the dogs so he let his friends help him walk the dogs. This written comprehension response would be given a 3. The response thoroughly tells the problem and solution of the story, as well as gives great details from the story to support the response.

Homework Your child’s teacher might have different homework or expectations. This is an overview of homework. For any homework questions please email your child’s teacher.

Math Homework Each week a math sheet will be sent home. Each evening, your child will have 3 problems to complete Monday through Thursday. Please make sure the math is completed each day neatly and accurately. They must show their work for some problems.

Spelling Homework Your child’s weekly spelling words will be sent to you through the end of that month. Each week student’s will have 10 words in the spelling pattern they are working on and two challenge vocabulary words. Not every class/student’s spelling words will be the same. Please review the spelling homework menu and follow directions. Homework is to be completed neatly each evening in the “homework” composition notebook sent home in your child’s book bag. Please have them label the top of each page with the activity.

Reading Homework Reading homework will be different from Kindergarten. Students will not be bringing home FRED books or books from school. We ask that you choose a book each evening from home and fill out their reading log each evening. There is also a reading menu of homework items that need to be completed Based on your child’s teacher requirements. These homework assignments need to be completed in the same composition notebook as spelling with the same expectations.
