1 Welcome to Ross Street School #
Let’s take a look at this upcoming school year…

2 Introducing… Miss DeLorenzi
I graduated from Kean University with a BA in Early Childhood, Elementary Ed, and Students with Disabilities. I have taught 1st Grade, 4th and 5th Grade Special Ed, and Kindergarten. This is my first FULL year as a Kindergarten teacher!  I have a strong passion for teaching, getting to know my students, and how they learn successfully to live up to their fullest potential.

3 Kindergarten Expectations In Kindergarten, your child will learn:
Letters and their sounds Days & months Phonics and word analysis Common Sight Words How to write and count numbers (by ones, fives and tens) How to decompose numbers less than or equal to ten. They will also learn how to identify… a purpose of a story main ideas and details Different character traits Sequence of events (beginning, middle, end) Print concepts in a book/story.

4 Rules in our Classroom Hands and feet to ourselves! Raise your hand.
*Personal Space* Raise your hand. Use manners Be kind to others Always try your best *We made the rules together at the carpet and each student signed their name. 

5 About Our Day… Please encourage your child to use the bathroom before school *time is limited.* Snack-time: I recommend easy-open snacks, lunch- ables & sandwiches take up a lot of time. We will begin using Foundations: student handbook includes… Most of our stories, posters, discussions, and lessons comes from our new Kindergarten curriculum is called Benchmark: Jobs: assigned every Monday for the week (each child will have a turn). Line leader -Calendar Weather Lights

6 Behavior Chart/Reward System
Displayed every day is a sticker chart. Each child earns a sticker for positive behavior such as: Following directions Helping a friend Listening Working hard Correcting a bad choice or behavior Walking quietly in the hallway Excellent behavior and complete sticker chart leads to the PRIZE BOX!

7 Raz Kids www.readinga-z.com
RazKids: each child will be sent home with a username and password (which is always a picture). This is an excellent website to use at home. Allows you to read or listen to a specific story on their own grade level, then answer comprehension questions after. Both Fiction and Nonfiction stories are fun to read. When reading with your child, I recommend looking through the pictures of the story first and asking what they see. In class, this is called a “picture-walk.” This guides them to find out what they are about to read and pictures help them figure out tricky words. 1st Assignment: Letters: Match all uppercase and lowercase letters. 2nd Assignment: First Story: “The Bus” 3rd Assignment: Vocabulary: Have your child identify the pictures of “things in school” and practice using correct vocabulary. (Backpacks, supplies in class, etc.) I am able to “track activity,” monitor student growth, and help me determine instruction needed. *Please note: Only I am able to see the results for each student!

8 Centers When we get started with lessons and routines, your child will be going to different “centers” every day. This is when I pull a group aside Centers are small groups (4 students) with different work assigned to each station. This takes a lot of practice on how to behave in centers, work together quietly, and get used to the games and/or routine, but students love them! Kindergarten centers include:  Writing: First, tracing and learning letters, eventually rainbow-writing sight words, small sentences. *Fun activities – sand/playdough Reading: This group will be assigned a book to look at pictures, read together or individually. Usually a “big book” or something we’ve worked on as a class. Math: Working a lot with numbers, assembling patterns in groups, dice, math games, etc.

9 Sight Words There will be a set of words for each month. However, September and October’s will be combined. Students will fill in each color of the rainbow when they learn those words. We will be creating a word wall in class so the words are always visible. Students will come up and place words introduced in class under their beginning letter. Please display their sight words at home and practice! 

10 Every Day Math I will be sending home a login card at home for ConnectEd as soon as we start introducing it in class. 
