Ch. 4:6 - Leadership Leadership = the skill or ability to encourage people to work together and do their best to achieve common goals Leader = an individual who leads or guides others, or who is in charge or in command of others

Ch. 4:6 - Leadership Good leaders develop their leadership skills. It is a myth that good leaders are born with all of the skills and knowledge necessary to be a good, effective leader. All of the characteristics needed to be a good leader have to be learned. Some characteristics are inherent in some people. Inherent = existing in something as a permanent, essential, or characteristic attribute; born with it

Ch. 4:6 - Leadership Common Leadership Characteristics: Communicates effectively Respects the rights, dignity, opinions, and abilities of others Thinks creatively and asks, “What if?” Shows self-initiative, a willingness to work, and completes tasks without being reminded or pushed Understands the principles of democracy Works with a group and guides the group towards the goal Shows positivity and optimism, is open- minded, and knows how to compromise effectively Inspires and motivates others in a positive manner Praises others and gives credit where credit is due Participates in continuing education and professional development, and understands the concept of lifelong learning Understands own strengths AND weaknesses Displays self-confidence and willingness to take a stand
