What is Halloween? Halloween is also know as “All Hallows’ Eve, or All Saints’ Day.” It takes place on October 31st in a number of countries. Halloween comes from an old Celtic festival of Samhain relating to superstition. The Celts believed that at the end of summer the wall between the spirit world and the mortal world got very thin. Therefore, people would dance around bonfires wearing costumes to ward of the roaming of ghosts. In addition, they would carry around turnips to protect themselves from the evil spirits. Later, these traditions were brought over to North America by the Irish and Scottish in the 19th century. At that time the pumpkin replaced the turnip and was given the name “jack-o-lantern.” Today people celebrated Halloween in many different ways with a variety of activities.
