2  Very old Celtic holiday called “Samhain”  November 1 st was the start of the New Year.  The marked the end of summer.

3  October 31 was called All Hallow’s Eve.  October is the day when the world of the living and the dead become one.

4  Poor Celtic children went to homes on October 31 st.  They were given food.  For food, they would pray for the souls of the giver’s dead family.  They would pray on All Saint’s Day (Nov. 1)

5  This tradition began when people believed that making scary faces on pumpkins scares away evil ghosts!  We use pumpkins because there are a lot in America.

8  During Samhain, people worse masks and costumes to hide from evil spirits!  This became popular in the US in the 1930s.

12  Halloween makes over 5,000,000,000 dollars a year.  Halloween started 6,000 years ago in Ireland.  Boston had 30,128 Jack O Lanterns !  The first Jack O Lanterns were made from beets.  The word “witch” comes from the old English word, Wicce, which means wise woman.  Samhainophobia is a fear of Halloween.  The largest pumpkin in the world was in 1993, and was 500 Kilograms.
