3 *Halloween (All Hallow’s Eve)*
Halloween, also referred to (=called) as “All Hallow’s Eve”, falls on October 31 every year. (Hallow=Saint (聖) in old English) It is believed that on this day, ghosts, spirits, and witches come out to harm people. In order to scare the evil spirits away, people place scary decorations such as black cats, skeletons, and ghosts in front of their homes.

4 *“Trick or Treat” on Halloween*
Children dressed up in masks and colorful costumes go from door to door saying “trick or treat,” and people give them candy, cookies, fruits, or money.

5 *Jack – O’ Lantern* Pumpkin carving is a popular part of
modern America’s Halloween celebration. Pumpkins can be found everywhere in the country from doorsteps to dinner tables.

6 *History of Jack – O’ Lantern*
As the story goes, Stingy Jack liked to play tricks on everyone: even the Devil. One day he tricked the Devil. And when Jack died, he was refused from both heaven and hell. He had nowhere to go, so he had to wander about in the dark between heaven and hell.

7 He asked the Devil how he could leave as there was no light.
The Devil made Jack light his way as he went with his “Jack-O’ Lantern.” So on Hallow’s Eve, the Irish(= Ireland people) placed a light to keep Stingy Jack away. Later, they used pumpkins for Jack-O’ Lanterns because they were easier to carve out.
