Sharing the Road with Others Chapter 8 Sharing the Road with Others

Pedestrians —Pedestrians are the second largest category of motor vehicle deaths & injuries in NJ —Pedestrian activity is at its greatest in densely populated areas such as cities & town centers but it also is significant in neighborhoods & along and across suburban roadways. —

Pedestrians continued In most cases, pedestrians have the right of way. At all intersections. There is a crosswalk at every intersection, even if it is not painted as such. This is known as an unmarked crosswalk. Motorists are prohibited from blocking the crosswalk when stopped at a red light or stop sign.

When a pedestrian who is crossing at a crosswalk (marked or unmarked) a motorist MUST: Stop & stay stopped

What is the penalty for failure to yield to a pedestrian when a pedestrian suffers a serious injury? $100-500 fine Up to 25 days in jail & or driving privilege suspension: up to 6 months

5 ways Pedestrians & joggers can be safe on the road Never pass vehicle stopped at crosswalk Watch for signs that mark special hazard areas Drive cautiously along roadways with on-street parking Pedestrians/joggers should face towards oncoming traffic At night-watch for pedestrians walking along highways

3 key items a motorist should do when sharing the road with motorcycles Check blind spots twice Never follow motorcycles too closely They can brake quickly 3. Watch for motorcycles at intersections when making a left turn

When being passed by a motorcycle… Maintain Speed & Position

When driving alongside trucks, trailers, and buses When driving alongside trucks, trailers, and buses...motorists should be aware of: Reduced visibility Required stopping distance “No-Zones” or blind-spots *During bad weather a truck can take as much as 25% longer to stop

The “No-Zone” Principle Refer to Book….List the 4 zones on your paper and one fact for each zone. Highlight this information! Be ready to share what you wrote!

Buses Continued State Law requires all non-emergency vehicles to yield to the right of way to buses re-entering traffic after dropping off or picking up bus passengers. What is the penalty for violating this law? Not Less than $50 or more than $200 fine Up to 15 days in jail Or BOTH

Mopeds Moped Drivers may not exceed 25 mph and must follow all traffic signs and signals and drive on the right side of the road with the flow of traffic.

Under NJ law, 2 responsibilities of bicyclists, skateboarders & inline skaters are…. Bikes ridden after dark must have front seat & rear lights Use signals and follow normal traffic laws

Motorized scooters How old must you be to operate a motorized scooter? 12 years old Where can they be used? Designated municipal or county property

Trains & Railroads When you see the yellow RR sign, slow down Never race a train to a crossing Understand trains cannot stop quickly

Animals Often dart onto streets Be prepared for unexpected movement

Chapter 9

Vehicle Title —Certifies that you own the vehicle —Buyers name, address, date of sale, mileage, sale price, buyers signature — Present signed title and pay required fee —Must pay sales tax on vehicle

Renewing registration Registering a Vehicle —Complete Application —Show proof of ownership (Vehicle Title) —Show proof sales tax has been paid Renewing registration —Notice of expiration mailed 60 days before —Renew via phone, mail-in, or web

Vehicle Inspection —What to bring The Process Drivers license —Registration —Proof of insurance —Non expired inspection sticker —When moving into NJ, a motorist must have vehicle inspected within 14 days after registering it. The Process —Inspector will determine engine type and prepare for inspection —brake suspension, steering, wheel alignment and safety features (headlights, tail lights, tires, horn, windshield wipers and turn signals)

Insurance Every vehicle registered in NJ must have liability insurance Liability coverage is what protects you if you're at fault for an accident and you hurt someone or someone's property.
