National Honor Society Student Information

NHS seeks to honor students who are exemplary in four areas: Scholarship Character Leadership Service

SCHOLARSHIP To be considered for admission you must have at least a 3.5 cumulative unweighted grade point average and maintain it during membership.

SCHOLARSHIP List the semesters you have been involved in: • Honor Roll • CSF • Awards you have received while in high school Academic Athletic Performance (Band, Choir, Drama, Forensics, FFA…..) Students may include in Scholarship any AP classes taken and tests passed, but need not include individual scores on State Tests (5 on Language Arts, 4 on Science, etc.)

CHARACTER In this section list any clubs, sports teams, or organizations both at school and outside of school you are involved in.

LEADERSHIP Leadership experiences can be drawn from school and community activities while working with or for others.

Must show diversity within leadership activities. LEADERSHIP-Examples • Youth leader • Soccer Referee • Vacation Bible School Teacher • Team Captain • Cross Age Tutor • Class or Club Officer • Committee Chairperson • Newspaper/Yearbook Contributor • Community Programs • Choir or Band Section Leader Must show diversity within leadership activities.

SERVICE In this section you will be asked to list both School and Community Service that you have completed or are currently participating in. For service, if all of your service events are required events for a particular class such as Leadership, you will not score well on the scoring rubric. You must go above and beyond what is required.

ADDITIONAL NOTES Don’t mark semesters that haven’t occurred yet. In other words, if you’re a junior, don’t mark any boxes on second semester junior year. Only things completed or currently in progress count towards membership.

Some organizations may appear more than once on your application Some organizations may appear more than once on your application. For example, you may have CSF listed on your Scholarship page, but you may also have it listed on the Leadership page if you were an officer in CSF. In general though things should appear in only one category.

DON’T PROCRASTINATE!!!! The application form requires that you obtain signatures from advisors/coaches/mentors in order to verify participation in the various organizations you include. Please be sure to begin the process of seeking out those verifying signatures as soon as possible, as it may take some time to meet up with those advisors—particularly if they are not campus- related advisors. Budget your time; plan accordingly. Activities that are not verified with a signature will not be counted.

IMPORTANT FOR VERIFICATION Signatures are the preferred method of verification. You should use phone numbers ONLY if your supervisor is OFF CAMPUS and unavailable.

APPLICATION IS ON THE REC WEBSITE http://rec.cusd.com/ Academics Tab, then National Honor Society link Download it and save a copy on your computer. Type the application. If you can’t download a writable version, on your home computer, use one in the Library or elsewhere on campus.

There are directions and examples on the top of each page of the application to assist you in what to put in each category. You want to make your application look balanced. Pages DO NOT have to be full to qualify, but a blank page will disqualify your application.

When is the application due? Forms will be accepted in room 621 or 623 NO LATER than 3:00 p.m. on Friday, October 27th. NO EXCEPTIONS. We will hold application workshops on Thursday, October 5th from 3:00-3:30 and Thursday, October 12th from 7:30- 8:00 am in room 621 and 623 to answer your questions. Officers and Advisors will be available.

All students will be notified of their status after the committee has met via letter. If a student has not been selected for this year, feedback will be provided as to what areas might need improvement for subsequent years. This process will take 3-4 weeks.

Please remember that NHS accepts the MOST well-rounded and active scholars. If you are not included in this year’s NHS honorees, you can still feel proud of the hard work and effort you have made to contribute to your school and your community. By virtue of the fact that you have chosen to apply, you are demonstrating a commitment that already goes above and beyond your average high school student. Well done!
