3 Congratulations! You have been invited because you have earned a cumulative GPA of at least 3.95 by the end of your sophomore year AND You had at least 45 hours logged in at the LINCS office by mid-January.

4 What are the other requirements?
You have already demonstrated scholarship and service, now you must demonstrate the following: School Involvement Leadership Character

5 Follow the instructions carefully
Follow the instructions carefully. The committee is not looking to trip you up, but if you cannot follow directions, are you a worthy NHS candidate? If your responses are illegible or nonsensical, how important is your petition to you?

6 School involvement You will fill out a form listing all activities you have participated in from grades Please limit yourself to these grades. Middle school doesn’t count. You must have the adult supervisor’s name and contact information listed so that your involvement can be verified.

7 Leadership You must have demonstrated leadership during your time at South Leadership can best be characterized as a sustained effort or position that helps you and others work toward a specific goal. Leadership positions are those in which you have gone above and beyond the normal realm of participation in certain activities. A good leadership role is one that is ongoing.

8 Leadership Good Examples of Leadership
Questionable Examples of Leadership -Elected Officer of a Student Council Committee, Club, or Organization -Organized and facilitated group activities/service projects -Participating in class or an organization – not acceptable -Homeroom Representative* -Team captain* *Titles like “captain” and “homeroom rep” have different meanings and responsibilities in different sports and homerooms. The detailed description is what will make all the difference. If you’re unsure, please ask me. You must include a DETAILED DESCRIPTION of your job as a leader.

9 Character You will additionally be evaluated in the following areas:
Your current and past teachers will evaluate you based on the quality of your character Ex. Regularly completed homework assignments Ex. Never cheated Your attendance record is in good standing If you have more than 20 absences (excused OR unexcused), you must attach a statement of explanation Your discipline record is in good standing No major infractions in the past calendar year (suspension/arrest) No more than 5 detentions in the past calendar year Any prior major infractions must include a statement of reflection

10 Verification/Recommendation Forms
There are 2 forms of verification/recommendation One is for verification of a leadership activity and one is for verification of a service activity. You write the description of the activity; the person who supervised you signs the front side and fills out the rating chart of the back. The forms must be in separate sealed envelopes with a signature across the flap to ensure security

11 Your completed application is due on Friday, March 1, 2019 by 7:30 AM
There will be a box outside room 258 – you may place your petition in it. If you want to turn it in earlier, you may do so. Bring it to me in 258 whenever you are finished with it.

12 Induction You will be notified in early April if you have been selected or not. If you are selected, there is an induction ceremony on Thursday, May 2 at 7:00 PM.

13 Maintaining Your Membership
Your membership is valid for college applications as long as you: Earn 15 NHS Credits during your senior year Complete 4 hours of 1 on 1 tutoring Complete 4 hours of library tutoring Provide a copy of your report card for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd MPs to Ms. Falchek within one week of their availability Maintain good standing in character Maintain a Cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.95 and have no D’s or F’s on your report card

14 Do it for the right reason……
You are the “cream of the crop,” “the best and the brightest,”….. You must be accountable for doing what you say you are going to do. Missing scheduled tutoring days, not responding to s, etc. will result in probation and/or dismissal.
