What is the scientific method? Essential Question What is the scientific method?

4. experiment- used to test a hypothesis. General Scientific Method Vocabulary 1.theory- hypothesis that has been tested and supported by a great amount of evidence over a long period of time. 2. law- statement describing (but not explaining) a natural event or phenomenon. 3. hypothesis- suggested explanation to a problem or observation based upon known information. 4. experiment- used to test a hypothesis. 5. variable- anything that can affect the results of an experiment.

7. data- observations and measurements made during an experiment. 6. Control (control group)- part of the experiment that maintained without change in order to provide comparison for the part of the experiment containing the variable. 7. data- observations and measurements made during an experiment. 8. conclusion- a summary that explains whether or not the data support the hypothesis. 9. inference-a logical interpretation based on prior knowledge and experience. 10. Independent variable (manipulated)- variable that is manipulated (changed)by the experimenter. 11. Dependent variable (responding)- variable that is affected by the independent (manipulated) variable.

Scientific Method There are 8 steps to the scientific method Identify the problem or make an observation. Gather information (research the problem). State the hypothesis (make an educated guess) Design and carry experiment. Make observation and record data. 6. Organize and analyze data 7. State the conclusion 8. Retest only if you don’t prove hypothesis

Graphing in Science Graphing is an important procedure used by scientists to display the data that is collected during a controlled experiment. There are 3 types of graphs used in science: bar graph, pie graph, and line graph.

Bar graphs are used to compare things between different groups to track over time. Pie graphs are used to show percentages or proportional data. Line graphs can be used to compare changes over the same period of time for more than one group. It also shows the relationship between the independent and dependent variable.

A graph contains five major parts: LINE GRAPH a. Title b. The independent variable- placed on the x axis (horizontal) c. The dependent variable- placed on the y axis (veritical) d. The scales for each variable- scale intervals in multiples of 2, 5, 10, 20, 25, 50, or 100 e. A legend (key)
