An African Adventure Year 2 – Term 1 Literacy Phonics – continuing to learn about letter patters and alternative pronunciations and spellings. Applying our phonics skills to our reading in order to develop fluency and accuracy when reading aloud and in our heads. Developing our speaking and listening skills through role-play activities linked to the story of The Lion King. Reading for pleasure and enjoyment. Demonstrating understanding of what we have read by discussing with our friends and asking and answering questions. Ensuring we use capital letters and full stops in our sentence writing. Using connectives. Building our vocabulary when exploring the story of The Lion King and Handa’s Surprise and using WOW words in our writing. Writing for a range of purposes, including writing letters to children in Tanzania. Science Animals unit of work focussing on the pond habitat. Identify and name a variety of animals in their habitats. Observing creatures. Gathering and recording data. Using equipment to help. Learning about lifecycles. Observing and sketching the local environment looking for seasonal changes. Maths Counting up to 100 objects by grouping. Consolidating our knowledge of addition and subtraction facts to 10, 20 and 100. Counting in steps of 2, 5 and 10 and recognising multiples. Understanding the value of any number in a 2 digit number by partitioning. Using number lines for addition and subtraction problems. Beginning to record our methods. Estimating and comparing the weight of different items. Visualising and identifying properties of 2D and 3D shapes. Continuing with learn-its and securing number facts for Big Maths Beat That.
