It’s about state pride.” - Rebecca Blank, Chancellor UW-Madison, Marsha Mailick, Vice Chancellor, UW-Madison EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED RESEARCH IN WISCONSIN The University of Wisconsin-Madison is taking part in the formation of the Center for Trustworthy Scientific Cyberinfrastructure, a collaborative effort to improve cybersecurity at NSF to protect scientific data. Researchers at Marquette University have received NSF funding to investigate and improve how air flow closest to the ground is modelled. The results of this project will improve weather models and provide more advanced warning for severe weather. NSF-funded researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee are working to ensure the next generation of lithium ion batteries for electric cars are environmentally sustainable. The researchers will work in collaboration with General Motors, Johnson Controls, and PE International. Wisconsin Since 1952, NSF has supported nearly 50,000 graduate students through research fellowships. Wisconsin received $18 million in NSF educational funding in FY 2016. THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) not only funds cutting-edge research at institutions across the country; NSF’s education initiatives ensure the U.S. will remain a global leader in innovation for generations to come. EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN WISCONSIN University of Wisconsin-Madison is using NSF funding to support STEM education for middle school students in rural and underserved areas. The goal of the project is to help students gain a deep understanding of biology through hands-on activities. Filament Games is developing a multi-player Virtual Reality game for high school students. The game will require collaborative thinking between students to solve complex, STEM-based problems. The NSF is supporting University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh researchers who are investigating the role of gender and ethnicity in how parents solve science problems with their elementary-aged children. Marquette University has received NSF funding to support their scholarship program for low-income students aiming to receive a Master’s degree in computer science.
