1 North Dakota THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) is the only federal agency whose mission includes support for all fields of fundamental science and engineering. BY THE NUMBERS North Dakota in FY 2016 $21 Million: NSF funds awarded 9: NSF-funded institutions 47: NSF grants awarded “Partnering with our research institutions and private-sector companies to generate jobs and new business opportunities is vital to the future of our state.” − Former Governor Jack Dalrymple EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED RESEARCH IN NORTH DAKOTA A team of scientists from North Dakota State University, Fargo developed a polymer formulation to protect bronze monuments and statues that are outdoors. The removable coatings were licensed to a local company to further develop and market the technology. Researchers at the University of North Dakota are studying the effects of plant locations on grassland diversity and resistance to invasion by non-native species. The team is also working with a citizen group to promote public understanding of tallgrass prairie. NSF-funded scientists at the University of North Dakota have developed an oilseed-based biojet fuel for aviation turbines and diesel engines that withstands cold temperature and is more stable than traditional biodiesel fuels. North Dakota Since 1952, NSF has supported nearly 50,000 graduate students through research fellowships. North Dakota received $5 million in NSF educational funding in FY 2016. THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) not only funds cutting-edge research at institutions across the country; NSF’s education initiatives ensure the U.S. will remain a global leader in innovation for generations to come. EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN NORTH DAKOTA North Dakota State University created a program that gives college students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience by solving science and technology challenges faced by local businesses. Funding from NSF enabled Turtle Mountain Community College to purchase a computer-based learning tool that assists students learning math. Within the first year of implementation, the student success rates in basic math climbed 22 percent. Fort Berthold Community College is building capacity to produce K-12 STEM teachers to serve high-needs reservation schools. Teachers will complete a Master of Science in Science Education degree that integrates native culture into program activities. Lakota culture is being incorporated into several courses and research projects at Sitting Bull College. The newly accredited environmental science degree program includes the study of traditional plant use. These skills will help students get jobs in the local workforce, where traditional knowledge is highly valued. Courtesy: “Education and research, and resulting economic stimulation, are the keys to North Dakota's future. And North Dakota State University is an economic engine that does a very good job of educating students, creating new knowledge, advancing technology and broadening the economic base of the state and the region.” − Dr. Dean L. Bresciani, President, North Dakota State University “UND is providing a significant return on investment for North Dakota. We are helping to enrich a burgeoning economy … [and] preparing an increasingly educated workforce with the skills of critical thought, effective communication, and problem solving that is desired in employees in every industry.” − Dr. Robert O. Kelley, Former President, University of North Dakota Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF) 
