Researchers at Princeton University have used an NSF grant to develop a new material capable of bending light backwards, which will be used to improve optical and chemical sensing capabilities for homeland security, medical diagnostics, and environmental monitoring. In 2010, Rutgers University received $56.7 million in funding from the NSF, disclosed 134 inventions, was granted 26 patents, and received $8.7 million from licensing. 3 INVESTMENT IN NSF = INVESTMENT IN NEW JERSEY 1 University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Economic Impact Report, 2009 2 A Princeton Profile 2009-2010 3 Rutgers University Office of Technology Commercialization Each NSF grant awarded in FY 2009 supported approximately 4 researchers. I believe in the profound importance of scientific discovery and innovation as an engine for economic and social progress. −Shirley Tilghman, President, Princeton University

2 New Jersey In addition to funding cutting-edge research at institutions across the country, NSF’s education initiatives ensure the U.S. will remain a global leader in innovation for generations to come. NSF-supported graduate students at Rutgers University used a newly designed mobile laboratory to bring hands-on laboratory demonstrations to middle schools across New Jersey.
