1 New York THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) is the only federal agency whose mission includes support for all fields of fundamental science and engineering. BY THE NUMBERS New York in FY 2016 $480 Million: NSF funds awarded 2nd: National ranking in NSF funds 135: NSF-funded institutions 1,519: NSF grants awarded 27: NSF research centers/facilities “Without ignoring the real constraints facing our economy, it is important to remember that research is an irreplaceable investment in our economic strength.” − David J. Skorton, Former President, Cornell University EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED RESEARCH IN NEW YORK NSF-funded scientists at Columbia University developed a technique to remotely detect landslides using existing seismic networks and satellite imagery. The data they collect is furthering our ability to predict catastrophic landslides. Researchers at SUNY at Stony Brook have created an industrial spray coating that mimics the naturally tough material found in sea shells. This development will improve performance and durability of coatings for a wide range of applications, such as aircraft engines and energy systems. A researcher at the University of Rochester has demonstrated that wild yarrow plants that have more sets of genes are substantially fitter than plants with fewer sets of genes. This discovery may help in the creation of hardier and more productive crops. 2 New York Since 1952, NSF has supported nearly 50,000 graduate students through research fellowships. New York received $62 million in NSF educational funding in FY 2016. THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) not only funds cutting-edge research at institutions across the country; NSF’s education initiatives ensure the U.S. will remain a global leader in innovation for generations to come. EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN NEW YORK Researchers at SUNY at Buffalo developed a program to help pre-schoolers develop math skills. Studies have shown that the program leads to large increases in the mathematical knowledge of young children, especially kids from low-income communities. A group of middle school students mentored by a NSF-funded graduate fellow won first place in a robotics competition. The “Applying Mechatronics to Promote Science” program at New York University pairs graduate students with teachers to develop lessons in robotics. With support from NSF, a small business has developed an interactive ecology textbook. The textbook, which is in use at over 100 colleges, allows students to conduct their own experiments via simulations and to watch videos and animations that explain concepts. The NSF-funded Summer Institutes in Social Psychology supports an intensive training program for more than 200 advanced graduate students studying social psychology. The program provides young scholars with experience in cutting-edge theories and methods. Courtesy: “Whether it is upstate or downstate, the best long term economic development strategy is to have the best education system in the world....” − Governor Andrew Cuomo “Nowhere in the world do businesses and communities stand to benefit more by partnering with higher education than here in New York—a mighty hub of innovation, diversity, and skilled human capital.” − Dr. Nancy L. Zimpher, Chancellor, State University of New York Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF) 
