1 Oklahoma THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) is the only federal agency whose mission includes support for all fields of fundamental science and engineering. BY THE NUMBERS Oklahoma in FY 2016 $30 million: NSF funds awarded : NSF-funded institutions 117: NSF grants awarded 4: NSF research centers/facilities “By conducting the bulk of the fundamental research in this country, our colleges and universities play a foundational role in the innovation ecosystem by producing research that fuels new industries and our economy.” − Dr. Kelvin Droegemeier, Vice President for Research, University of Oklahoma EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED RESEARCH IN OKLAHOMA Researchers at Oklahoma State University have discovered a gene that can increase the size of leaves, in turn increasing the photosynthetic capacity of the plant. The gene was discovered in a model plant called Brachypodium distachyon, but the approach be used to improve feedstock yields of important energy crops like switchgrass and sorghum. In collaboration with Turkish scientists, researchers at the University of Central Oklahoma are studying the effect of environmental toxins, including alcohol, on the stress levels of pollinators, in an attempt to shed light on declining honeybee populations in the U.S. A research team at the University of Oklahoma is shedding light on where and how life may have started in our galaxy. They mapped the distribution of oxygen in the Milky Way galaxy and found that oxygen is generally more abundant closer to the center of the galaxy, which may provide clues on the origins of life. Courtesy: INVESTMENT IN SCIENCE = INVESTMENT IN OKLAHOMA Oklahoma companies received $14 million in venture capital in Almost 53,000 Oklahoma residents work in science and engineering occupations.1 In 2012, Oklahoma had 7,700 high technology businesses that employed 153,000 people.1 Oklahoma residents were awarded 4,839 patents between The Norman campus and Health Science Center at University of Oklahoma collectively rank 90th among U.S. academic institutions in terms of science and engineering expenditures.1 University of Oklahoma has an annual economic impact of $2.2 billion, creates and supports more than 45,000 jobs annually, and generates $393 million tax revenue, according to a 2016 report. 2 1 Science and Engineering Indicators 2016 NSF 2 The University of Oklahoma, Community Impact Report, 2016 Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF) 

2 Oklahoma Since 1952, NSF has supported nearly 50,000 graduate students through research fellowships. Oklahoma received $4 million in NSF educational funding in FY 2016. THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) not only funds cutting-edge research at institutions across the country; NSF’s education initiatives ensure the U.S. will remain a global leader in innovation for generations to come. EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN OKLAHOMA The Stimulating Enthusiasm, Exploration and Discovery through Biotechnology Education project at Tulsa Community College encourages middle and high school students to pursue biotech careers. Students and teachers engage in a week-long summer course that includes learning activities and inquiry based lessons. Graduate STEM Fellows from the University of Oklahoma work with teachers of rural Oklahoma schools to incorporate nanotechnology activities into the K-12 curriculum. The classroom activities engage more than 1,200 students and provide access to state-of-the-art research and lab instruments. Scientists at Oklahoma State University worked with the Oklahoma Museum network to provide science discovery experiences to fifth-graders in rural areas through a mobile museum exhibit. The Science Matters exhibit engages both students and teachers in bioenergy and science experiments, while improving awareness about alternative energy. Courtesy: & “Higher education continues to be the best investment our policy leaders can make to ensure a stronger economy and brighter future for the state.” − Dr. Glen D. Johnson, Chancellor, Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education “In the 21st century STEM pervades all industries, from health care, agriculture, banking, oil, all entertainment and media platforms, and our military. Our local, state and national economy and systems are all dependent on STEM.” − Eyo Effiong, President and Founder of STEM Achievement Foundation, Oklahoma Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF) 
