Arizona THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) is the only federal agency whose mission includes support for all fields of fundamental science and engineering. BY THE NUMBERS Arizona in FY 2016 $255 Million: NSF funds awarded 9th: National ranking in NSF funds 25: NSF-funded institutions 436: NSF grants awarded 10: NSF research centers/facilities “The most recent ten-year employment projections by the U.S. Labor Department show that of the 20 fastest growing occupations projected for 2014, 15 of them require significant mathematics or science preparations to successfully compete for a job.” −Jan Brewer, Former Arizona Governor EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED RESEARCH IN ARIZONA A team of investigators from the University of Arizona has developed mathematical tools to model the natural forces that reshape shorelines. Their work offers a powerful new technique to predict the effects of storms and the action of water along the coast. An NSF-supported research team at Arizona State University’s Biodesign Institute has discovered new insights into the mechanism of photosynthesis. Their findings could contribute to the development of organic solar cells, which are of commercial interest because of their relatively low cost compared to traditional silicon solar cells. With support from NSF's Division of Information and Intelligent Systems, a research team at the University of Arizona has developed new head-mounted display technologies for use by surgeons during medical procedures. The improved image projection may also have useful applications for training and education, engineering, and entertainment. 2 Arizona Since 1952, NSF has supported nearly 50,000 graduate students through research fellowships. Arizona received $25 million in NSF educational funding in FY 2016. THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) not only funds cutting-edge research at institutions across the country; NSF’s education initiatives ensure the U.S. will remain a global leader in innovation for generations to come. EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN ARIZONA Maricopa County Community College is working to increase the ability of secondary STEM teachers and student leaders to learn information and communications technology. Program participants receive training, then implement the tools and collaborative learning methods in their courses. NSF-funded researchers at Arizona State University are working to better understand the factors that contribute to science teacher attrition rates. Their study documents the development of 120 beginning secondary teachers over a three year time span. Mesa Community College and Northern Arizona are partnering to develop career and educational pathways in geospatial technology from high schools through two-year colleges and universities. The program includes sustained professional development activities and support for college faculty and secondary teachers to implement the curriculum. Courtesy: “Combining high quality education in programs from bachelor’s to doctoral and professional degrees with innovative research and community engagement, institutions like the University of Arizona drive their state’s economies, contribute to civic well-being, and promote a better quality of life for individual citizens.” −University of Arizona President Dr. Ann Weaver Hart “The progress of the past decade has demonstrated that Arizona is poised to become one of America’s leading centers for innovation-based economic development, with potential for global leadership in a range of industries, which besides the biosciences includes solar energy, aerospace, and defense.” −Arizona State University President Dr. Michael M.
