1 Oregon THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) is the only federal agency whose mission includes support for all fields of fundamental science and engineering. BY THE NUMBERS Oregon in FY 2016 $90 Million: NSF funds awarded 20th: National ranking in NSF funds 28: NSF-funded institutions : NSF grants awarded “We must invest in faculty and research…We must fuel the economy of the state, and contribute to our world through our discoveries and the students we enlighten.” - Mr. Michael H. Schill, President, University of Oregon EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED RESEARCH IN OREGON An Oregon State University research study examining Oregon’s Mt. Hood found that a mixing of two different types of magma is the key to the historic eruptions of Oregon's tallest mountain. This information will help clarify the processes that trigger volcanic eruptions and help predict future eruptions in Mt. Hood. Researchers at the University of Oregon at Eugene used a novel genetic sequencing technique to determine the origins of a mosquito species that transmits deadly diseases such as dengue and malaria. NSF-funded scientists at Lewis and Clark College have developed a robot capable of climbing vertical walls. The “stickybot” has feet that are covered in the same type of adhesive found on the feet of geckos. INVESTMENT IN NSF = INVESTMENT IN OREGON INNOVATION Research at the University of Oregon was responsible for $38 million in company income in 2014 and 262 start up jobs.1 Discoveries at the University of Oregon provided $38.8 million in company income in calendar year Oregon received $194 million in venture capital deals in Nearly 80,500 Oregon residents work in science and engineering occupations.2 Oregon ranks 8th nationally for the number of patents issued per S&E worker.2 Oregon universities awarded 1,700 Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in science and engineering fields in 1 2 Science and Engineering Indicators 2016 NSF Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF) 

2 Oregon Since 1952, NSF has supported nearly 50,000 graduate students through research fellowships. Oregon received $10 million in NSF educational funding in FY 2016. THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) not only funds cutting-edge research at institutions across the country; NSF’s education initiatives ensure the U.S. will remain a global leader in innovation for generations to come. EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN OREGON The Oregon Mathematics Leadership Institute Partnership and the North Cascades and Olympic Science Partnership are working to recruit teachers in 28 rural school district in Oregon and Washington state to raise the mathematic and scientific literacy of area students. The Noyce Scholarship Program at Portland State University is creating a program for master teachers to serve as professional mentors for the Noyce scholars as they prepare to teach science and mathematics in high-needs school districts. The Dissertations Initiative for the Advancement of Climate Change Research was initiated by the University of Oregon and Whitman College, and brings together natural and social scientists to facilitate the interaction of students interested in understanding and mitigating climate change and its impacts.  A talented group of students at Oregon State University is completing their doctoral degrees with the help of a transition fellows program at the Center for Sustainable Materials Chemistry. After graduation, these students will enter the scientific workforce. “The first goal of the University’s own strategic plan emphasizes that OSU will provide a transformative educational experience for all learners. We will achieve this outcome [by providing] learners of all ages with excellent teaching, research opportunities and real-world experiential learning. Doing so will allow our students to be ready for success in life and career.” - Dr. Edward J. Ray, President, Oregon State University “Original research is one of the most powerful education experiences a student can have. It forces you to think creatively, reason abstractly, collaborate, communicate…promotes intellectual resilience and produces real contributions to human knowledge.” - Mr. John R. Kroger, President, Reed College - Father Mark L. Poorman, President, University of Portland Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF) 
