Elements of Design

Elements of design include: Space Line Form Texture Color

Space The three-dimensional expanse that a designer is working with as well as the area around or between objects within that expanse. The two aspects of space: - The size of the overall area - The arrangement of the objects w/in the space

Space Large open spaces give many the feeling of freedom and luxury. Too much empty space can make people feel lonely and uncomfortable.

Line Delineates space, outlines forms and conveys a sense of movement or direction Examples include the edges of a wall, floor or ceiling.

Lines can be… Straight Curved

Lines can be…Directional vertical (convey strength and stability, stripes) horizontal (restful)

Lines can be… Directional.. zig-zag (evoke excitement or movement)

Form Describes the shape and structure of solid object, may be 2-dimensional (walls or rugs) or 3-dimensional (furniture)

Form Large heavy objects give a feeling of stability, they can anchor a room (sofas, large pieces of furniture).

Texture The appearance or feel of a surface; the feeling of roughness or smoothness. Some printing techniques can fool the eye.

Texture Plush carpet, soft fabrics provide a sense of comfort.

Texture Nubby, rough materials give a feeling of ruggedness and stability.

Texture Smooth velvets and heavy brocades suggest luxury.

Texture Glass, metal and stone gives a feeling of coolness.

Texture Rough textures make objects appear larger.

Texture Smooth textures appear lighter in color (they reflect the light).
