1 Elements for Success Elements of Design

2 Color Most significant element of design.
Can create illusions using warm and cool colors. Allows people to express individuality.

3 COLOR WHEEL Primary Colors: Red, Yellow, and Blue
Used to create all other colors on the color wheel.

4 COLOR WHEEL Secondary Colors: Orange, violet and green
Made by mixing equal amounts of neighboring primary color Violet-Red and Blue Orange-Red and Yellow Green-Yellow and Blue

5 COLOR WHEEL Tertiary/Intermediate Colors:
Made by adding a primary color and it’s neighboring secondary. Primary is always listed first. Red-Orange Yellow-Orange Yellow-Green Blue-Green Blue-Violet Red-Violet

6 Line Most basic element of design.
Delineates space, outlines form, and conveys a sense of movement or direction: All lines are either straight or curved. All lines have direction: Horizontal, vertical, or diagonal Horizontal=restful Diagonal=excitement Vertical=strength and stability

7 Lines Vertical lines Curved lines Horizontal lines

8 Space Three dimensional expanse that a designer is working with, along as the area around or between objects within an area. Empty parts of room look bigger compared to smaller areas containing furniture. Large, open spaces give feeling of freedom or luxury. Opposite is true=too much empty space can feel lonely.

9 Space

10 Form Describes shape and structure of solid items. 2 or 3 dimensional
Walls and rugs are 2-dimensional. Have length and depth, little width. Chairs and furniture are 3-dimensional. Have depth, in addition to length and width.

11 Creating Stability with Form
Large, heavy objects give feeling of stability. Piano, sofa Another way to create stability is by grouping objects close together. Two chairs and a table placed close together Long, low tables

12 Harmonious Design Design in which designers strive to combine forms in a way that all items fit well with each other. Forms should harmonize with one another. Ask yourself: Is this form right for its intended function? Does it blend well with the other forms in the room?

13 Texture Appearance or feel of its surface. Tactile texture:
The feeling of roughness or smoothness-you can actually feel this type of texture. Visual texture: Texture you can see but can not feel. Rough looking wall paper, but it’s actually smooth. Shiny=visual Rough= tactile

14 Elements of Design Video
While watching the video, please fill out the worksheet. We will go over it as a class

15 Elements of Design Project
You are going to be creating a portfolio showing how elements are used in housing. We will be adding Principles of Design to this portfolio next week. The following elements need to be included: Color Line Shape Texture Space Form For each of these elements, you will find a picture that represents this element. You need to define what the element is and how this picture represents the element. The descriptions must be in detail! Think about all aspects of the element. You CAN’T print pictures from the internet. They must be magazine pictures. Descriptions need to be typed. You will need to neatly arrange the pictures in a 3-ring binder covered in sheet protectors.
