Aim: Explain how war and the king’s execution affected the Revolution

France at War Monarchs in many European countries feared that similar revolts might break out in their own countries Result: Austria & Prussia urged the French to restore Louis to his position as an absolute monarch April 1792: Legislative Assembly declared war Summer 1792: Prussian forces advanced on Paris Prussian commander threatened to destroy Paris if the revolutionaries harmed any member of the royal family August 10, 20,000 men and women invaded the palace where the royal family was staying Mob imprisoned Louis & Marie Antoinette 2

Jacobins Take Control Under pressure from radicals, the Legislative Assembly set aside the Constitution of 1791 Declared king deposed, dissolved the assembly, and called for the election of a new legislature (National Convention) Abolished the monarchy and declared France a republic Most people involved in the governmental change were members of a radical political organization Known as the Jacobins National Convention reduced Louis XVI’s role from king to prisoner Guided by Jacobins, it tried Louis for treason, found him guilty & sentenced him to death by guillotine 3

The War Continues The National Convention contend with the continuing war with Austria and Prussia Early 1793, Great Britain, Holland, & Spain joined Prussia & Austria against France French suffered a string of defeats To reinforce the French Army, the National Convention ordered a draft of 300,000 French citizens between the ages of 18 and 40 1794: Army had grown to 800,000 4
