2 The National Assembly Assembly votes to take/sell church lands Church under state control Civil Constitution makes bishops/priest elected & paid positions If they refused to these terms they were punished.

3 Constitution of 1791 Reflected the Enlightenment Limited Monarchy now in place Legislative Assembly Make laws Collect taxes Make decisions on war/peace Protect private property and support free trade

4 Louis XVI Failed Flight June 1791: Takes a coach north exiting Paris Disguised as a servant Marie Antoinette disguised as governess Recognized because of money Escorted by guards to Paris Believed to be a traitor to the Revolution

5 Fear of Revolution Spreads Much of Europe feared the French Revolution would spark revolt in their own countries. The emigres told horror stories. Enlightened rulers denounced French ideas. Catherine the Great went so far as to burn Voltaire’s letters. “ When ancient opinions and rules of life are taken away..we have no compass to govern us..” Edmund Burke

6 Call for a Republic Working class men & women called sans- culottes started to demand a republic. Within the Legislative Assembly different groups competed for power. The Jacobins were a radical group that also pushed for a republic. They used the media as well as pamphlets to spread the ideas of a French Republic.

7 War on Tyranny The ideas of freedom soon left the borders of France. By April of 1792 the Legislative Assembly has declared war on Austria, Prussia, Britain, and other oppressive governments. The fighting will last on and off until 1815.

8 The Monarchy Abolished Well trained Prussian forces were cutting down raw French recruits. Royalist & officers deserted the French army and joined the emigres, hoping to restore the king’s power.

9 Outbreaks of Violence Revolutionaries felt the king was favoring invaders August 10, 1792: Parisians stormed the Tuileries Slaughtered the king’s guards Royal family fled to the Legislative Assembly

10 Violence….September Massacres Prisons holding Nobles and Priest were attacked Prisoners killed along with regular criminals Known as “September Massacres”

11 The French Republic Radicals took control of the assembly Called to elect a new legislative body Suffrage: Right to vote extended to all males The National Convention: Radical Body

12 Convention of 1792 Abolish the Monarchy Declare France a Republic Seized lands of Nobles Jacobin Controlled 1792: New Constitution created 176 Execution of the King
