Digital Ubiquitous Mobile Broadband OLSR (DUMBO)

Outline Overview of DUMBO Some pictures

Disaster Earth quake Tsunami Flood Problems Faced Disruption of all infrastructure communication

Disaster ! When a disaster strikes us, reliable communication technologies are among the top needs: Search & Rescue Operations World-wide Expert Collaborations Etc. Multimedia communication can help deliver rich information: For medical, expert uses For friends and families For forensic investigations

Objectives The project aims to demonstrate the use of mobile ad hoc networks in an environment where fixed network infrastructure is not available, such as in the case of natural disaster.   Operations of heterogeneous networks in emergency conditions will be explored.   The experiments will provide feedbacks for further enhancement of related network and application protocols for emergency situation.

Challenges Unforeseen Wave Propagation Models Open space, debris field, mountain, valley, forest, and so on Limited choices of dependable communication technologies Satellite IP technology WiFi CDMA / UMTS / IMS

Challenges (Continued) Limited choices of mobile equipments that may enter the field PDA, Laptops, Small batteries or UPS Customizing the readily available / free / open source application programs. VoIP, Multimedia streaming Information Gathering (e.g. sensors) Face Recognition
