Public Free Wi-Fi Increase the use of ICT across the country Decrease Digital Divide Improve “Quality of Life” by ICT

Broadband Satellite for Disaster Management

Broadband Satellite for Asia-Pacific IPSTAR (Thaicom-4): Only HTS in Asia What is Broadband Satellite? Support Gbps traffic at Mbps speed with much lower cost than conventional satellite system. Deliver IP communications regardless of type - data, voice, or movie.

BTS Node B Terrestrial Backhaul, microwave or fiber RNC/BSC MSC Local leased line Ad hoc link or Emergency Backhaul Micro Node Femto cell Support 2G/3G for disaster recovery and add-on capacity in special event IPSTAR Gateway Satellite Broadband Applications for Disaster Communications Real-time Application CCTV Remote sensors (water, temperature, etc.) Critical Command Center SNG, TV Broadcast Satellite backhaul As redundancy to a terrestrial backhaul

Emergency Communication Command Center, Sichaun Earthquake 2008 Two portable 1.2 m antennas and IPSTAR user terminals served as the only communication tool for rescue operations Two channels of live video were transmitted to the headquarter in Chengdu Four IP phone sets were used for the army, rescue teams and the public

Mobile Backhaul in the aftermath of Japan Tsunami, 2011 3G BTS (IP Node-B) + Broadband Satellite Indoor 3G Femto Cell + Broadband Satellite * Photo: Courtesy from Mobile Operators

Quick IP Link Recovery at New Zealand Earthquake, 2011 IPSTAR service deployed in heart of Christchurch within 3 hours of the disaster by Farmside, under request from NZ Fire Services Another setup was done at Halswell @ command center of volunteer search and rescue operation team LandSAR.

Emergency Communications During South Thailand Floods, 2010 A tropical depression caused flooding in 11 out of 14 Southern provinces in November, 2010. Total of 400 BTS Stations out of operation. IPSTAR joined forces with AIS to provide Femtocell + WiFi + VoIP service using Mobile VSAT Vehicle. Deployment in Hat Yai and Park Mark of Surat Thani. Service used by local population as well as security and rescue personnel.

“Early Warning” for 2011 Thailand Floods Government agencies provide public information warning people to prepare for the flood through various media, TV, radio, internet and social media

Conclusion: Satellite for Disaster Relief Fill the communication, command and control gaps as a result of crippled terrestrial networks. Provide rapid, flexible disaster recovery and emergency communications in times of communication outages. Meet the precise needs of first responder teams in putting communication networks back on line in the event of man-made or natural disasters. Interconnect widely distributed systems and networks Broadcast on-the-spot news Deliver two-way, mobile telephone communications Provide nationwide coverage and consistent Quality of Service (QoS), regardless of location Satellite Systems can:
