7 Ways Of Knowing: Multiple Intelligences

People Smarts Intrapersonal Interpersonal

Intrapersonal Intelligence self-reflective abilities - step outside of ourselves and think about our own lives introspective intelligence - wanting to know the meaning, purpose, and significance of things awareness of the inner world of the self, emotions, values, believes, and our various quests for genuine spirituality

Continued Intrapersonal If this intelligence is one of your strong points: like to work alone shy away from others self-reflective and self-aware - in-tune with your inner feelings, values, beliefs, and thinking processes creative wisdom and insight highly intuitive inwardly motivated rather than needing external rewards often strong willed, self-confident, and have definite, well-thought out opinions Other people come to you for advice

Interpersonal Intelligence person-to-person way of knowing knowing that happens when we work with and relate to other people often as part of a team uses social skills that are needed for effective person-to-person communication you learn through personal interactions

Continued Interpersonal If this a strong area: have a lot of friends show great deal of empathy for other people exhibit an understanding of other view points love team activities of all kinds and are a good team member sensitive to others feelings and ideas skilled at conflict, resolution, mediation, and finding compromise

Ways in Which We Are Smart

Verbal-Linguistic Verbal-linguistic (sometimes called “word smart” or “book smart”). involves knowing which comes through reading, writing, and speaking understanding the order and meaning of words in both speech and writing properly use the language

Continued Verbal If this is a strong intelligence for you: highly developed skills for reading, speaking, and writing think in words like various kinds of literature, playing word games, writing poetry and stories, getting into involved discussions, debating, formal speaking, creative writing, and telling jokes precise in expressing yourself and irritated when others are not love learning new words do well on written assignments

Kinesthetic “learning by doing” - physical movements the knowing of our physical body The body “knows” many things that are not necessarily known by the logical mind, such as how to ride a bike or parallel park a car keen sense of body awareness communicate well through body language

Continued Kinesthetic If Kinesthetic is a strength: perform tasks much better after seeing someone else do it first like physical games of all kinds find it difficult to sit still for long periods of time easily bored or distracted if not actively involved

Auditory knowing that happens though sound and vibration music and rhythmic patterns

Continued Auditory If Auditory is a strength: very sensitive to sounds in the environment like the chirp of a cricket may study and work better with music in the background can often reproduce a melody pattern after hearing it only once various sounds, tones, and rhythms may have a visible effect on you like to create music and enjoy listening to a wide variety of music skilled at mimicking sounds, language, accents, and others’ speech patterns

Logical-Mathematical This intelligence uses numbers, math, and logic to find and understand patterns in the real world Tendency to think more conceptually and abstractly and are often able to see patterns and relationships in others miss

Continued Logical Those who are logical: conduct experiments, solve puzzles, and other problems enjoy working with numbers and mathematical formulas systematic and organized always have a logical rationale or argument for what you are doing or thinking at any given time

Visual We often say “A picture is worth a thousand words!” this intelligence represents the knowing that occurs through the shapes, images, patterns, designs, and textures see with eyes, but also include all the images inside the brain think in images and pictures - aware of objects, shapes, colors, textures, and patterns in the environment

Continued Visual Visual people: like to draw, paint, and make interesting designs and patterns love to work with jigsaw puzzles and read maps have definite opinions about colors that go together well excellent at performing tasks that require “seeing with mind’s eye,” such as visualizing, pretending, imagining, and forming mental images
