1 Multiple Intelligences
EDU1010 Learning Framework Last week we explored the ideas of talents and strengths. Remember, every person has inherent talents that, combined with knowledge and skill, help him or her achieve excellent performance on a consistent basis. But, sometimes you’ll hear someone say, “I’m not good at numbers,” or “I can’t draw.” Looking at multiple intelligences can help you understand your intelligence types and, though you may be strong in one or more kind of intelligence, you have the potential to improve your other intelligences.

2 Multiple Intelligences Developed
Harvard University professor, Howard Gardner, developed a theory called multiple intelligences in He believed seven intelligences are possessed by everyone. In 1996, he added an eighth intelligence. In 1983, Howard Gardner developed the theory of multiple intelligences. In a nutshell, he believed that every person possesses seven intelligences. Later, in 1996, he determined that there was an eighth intelligence.

3 Categories of Multiple Intelligences
Visual/spatial Verbal/ linguistic Musical/rhythmic Logical/ mathematical Bodily/ kinesthetic Interpersonal Intrapersonal Naturalistic The multiple intelligences are: Visual/spatial; Verbal/linguistic; Musical/rhythmic; Logical/mathematical; Bodily/kinesthetic; Interpersonal; Intrapersonal; and Naturalistic.

4 Multiple Intelligences Developed
If something ever came easily for you, you were probably using one of your well-developed intelligences. If something ever came easily for you, you were probably using one of your well-developed intelligences.

5 Visual/ Spatial Intelligence
A person who has well-developed visual/spatial intelligence thinks in pictures. These people know where things are located in their spaces and learn best when there are graphics attached to the topic. People who might be highly visual/spatially intelligent are artists, designers, and engineers.

6 Using Visual/ Spatial Intelligence
To use this intelligence to help you in school, use visuals in your notes. Connect concepts to pictures in your mind. Mind- mapping will work well for you. Use colored highlighters to make associations among information or to group items together. To use this intelligence to help you in school, use visuals in your notes. 7 Verbal/ Linguistic Intelligence
Verbal/linguistic people are word smart. They communicate through language, enjoy writing, spell well, and love to read books. Verbal/linguistic people are word smart. Poets and other writers, lawyers, and teachers could be examples of people with highly-developed verbal/linguistic intelligence.

8 Using Verbal/ Linguistic Intelligence
Putting this intelligence to work in your academic career could mean being a part of a study group to discuss concepts, reading other resources about topics you are studying, outlining your reading, and summarizing your notes. 9 Musical/Rhythmic Intelligence
People who have a well-developed musical/rhythmic intelligence love to sing, hum, and whistle. They understand music and respond to it immediately. Examples of those who have sharp musical/rhythmic intelligence might be musicians, singers, or dancers.

10 Using Musical/Rhythmic Intelligence
The easiest way to incorporate this intelligence is to listen to music while you study or take short breaks to listen to music. Some students even write jingles to help them to remember concepts. 11 Logical/Mathematical
This type of person is “numbers smart.” They can easily conceptualize and reason, use logic to problem- solve, and enjoy math and science. These people might enjoy a “numbers” business, like accounting, but could also be interested in forensics or investigations.

12 Using Logical/Mathematical Intelligence
To do well in an academic setting, there must be logical connections between topics. Real- life situations and case studies help these students. One organizational method for material is to draw a line down the center of a page, put the information in the left-hand column, and analyze, discuss, relate, and synthesize it in the right column. 13 Bodily/Kinesthetic Intelligence
People who have well-developed bodily/kinesthetic intelligence learn through body sensation, they move around a lot, and are what people call “hands on” students. Rhythmic activities are easy for those with well-developed bodily/kinesthetic intelligence. They might be interested in woodworking, art, or acting.

14 Using Bodily/Kinesthetic Intelligence
Don’t confine your study area to a desk or chair. Go outside, move around, even listen to recordings while you walk. Use flash cards, models, and games to study. Use repetition to learn facts--writing them down many times helps. Create study sheets. Don’t confine your study area to a desk or chair. 15 Interpersonal Intelligence
Interpersonal intelligence helps people communicate well with others. These people have good leadership skills, lots of friends, and are involved in extracurricular activities. Good leaders, counselors, and teachers might have strong interpersonal intelligence.

16 Using Interpersonal Intelligence
People with interpersonal intelligence study well in groups. Sharing information with others or teaching the concepts to someone else helps them to remember what they’ve studied. Interviewing outside sources is a good way for someone who has well-developed interpersonal intelligence internalize knowledge. People with interpersonal intelligence study well in groups. 17 Intrapersonal Intelligence
Intrapersonal intelligence applies to people who are deeply aware of their own feelings. They require time alone, and don’t like to work with groups. They are reflective and introspective. Intrapersonal intelligence applies to people who are deeply aware of their own feelings. They require time alone, and don’t like to work with groups. They are reflective and introspective. People who have intrapersonal intelligence know themselves. They are aware of their goals and make self-corrections all the time. They control their feelings and their emotional responses.

18 Using Intrapersonal Intelligence
To succeed in school, these kinds of students need a quiet place to study where they can be alone. Time for reflection, and even making journal entries about their learning, is crucial. These students work best at their own pace, and remember information they study in short time blocks followed by thought about the concepts. 19 Naturalistic Intelligence
Naturalistic intelligence is well-developed in those individuals who are interested in nature and the environment. They can usually recognize plants, animals, rocks, cloud formations, and the like. To remember this type of intelligence, think zoo keeper, gardener, physicist, or farmer.

20 Using Naturalistic Intelligence
These students should study outside whenever possible and relate information to its effect or relationship to the environment. They are able to collect their own data and resources. Some naturalistic students keep separate notebooks on each topic so that they can add new information as it becomes available. 21 Summing It Up Although Gardner surmises that all people possess all of these intelligences, some might have been nurtured, and others may not have been. Although Gardner surmises that all people possess all of these intelligences, some might have been nurtured, and others may not have been.
