2 + Who Is Howard Gardener? Identified seven distinct intelligences, as time progressed two more were added. The theory emerged that students possess different kinds of minds and therefore learn, remember, perform, and understand in different ways. Gardner says, “These differences challenge an educational system that assumes that everyone can learn the same materials in the same way.”

4 + Verbal-Linguistic Intelligence Uses words effectively Has highly developed auditory skills and often thinks in words Likes reading, playing word games, making up poetry and stories Taught by encouraging them to say and see words, read books together Tools include: computers, games, multimedia, books, tape recorders, and lecture

5 + Mathematical-Logical Intelligence Reasoning Calculating Able to see and explore patterns and relationships Likes to experiment, solve puzzles Taught through: logic games, investigations, and mysteries Need to learn and form concepts before they can deal with details

6 + Musical Intelligence Shows sensitivity to rhythm and sound Loves music but sensitive to sounds in the environment May study better with music in the background Taught by turning lessons into lyrics, speaking rhythmically, and tapping out time Tools include musical instruments, music, radio, stereo, CD- ROM, and multimedia

7 + Visual-Spatial Intelligence Aware of their environment Likes to draw, jigsaw puzzles, read maps, and daydream Taught through drawings, verbal and physical imagery Tools include: models, graphics, charts, photographs, drawings, 3-D modeling, video, videoconferencing, television, multimedia, text with pictures, charts and graphs

8 + Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence Uses the body effectively Sense of body awareness Likes movement, making things, and touching Communicates well through body language Taught through physical activity, hands-on learning, acting out, and role playing

9 + Interpersonal Intelligence Interacting with others Learn through interaction Has many friends, empathy for others, and street smarts Taught through group activities, seminars, and dialogues Tools include: telephone, audio conferencing, time and attention from the instructor, video conferencing, writing, computer conferencing, and email

10 + Intrapersonal Intelligence Understands one’s own interests and goals Tend to shy away from others In tune with their inner feelings, has wisdom, intuition, and motivation, strong willed, and confident Taught through independent study, and introspection Tools include: books, creative materials, diaries, privacy and time Most independent of all the learners

11 + Naturalist Intelligence Seem to be in love with the natural world Nature-smart Likes outdoors Aware of their natural surroundings Feel a definite sense of connection to the rest of nature Have an affinity for natural habitats such as forest, deserts, oceans, lakes, or streams (wet mounds)

12 + Existential Intelligence Sensitivity to tackle deep questions about human existence such as: the meaning of life, why do we die, and how did we get here? Skills include: reflective and deep thinking and design abstract theories
