2. Preoperational Thinking
Use of Symbols- Children learn that objects and words can be symbols
Make-believe play- Dramatic Play is they imitate real life situations
Egocentric Viewpoint- view world in terms of their own thoughts
Limited focus- find it difficult to focus on more than one feature at a time

3. What is Intelligence? =Mental abilities.
Preschoolers learn to read and count
Intelligence quotient(IQ)-composed of tasks and questions that correspond to age groups.
Several Problems with test
Only measures one kind of mental abilities & ignores others
Doesn’t tell about specific abilities ex. Two people with the same IQ have different strengths and weakness

4. 7 Multiple Intelligences
Verbal-linguistic –learns best through words
Logical-mathematical- find patterns to connect facts and observations
Visual-spatial- Learning is easiest through pictures and colors
Musical- rhythms and melodies help promote learning
Bodily-kinesthetic- skills in moving the body through space
Interpersonal-good at communicating with others
Intrapersonal- private and less social

6. Appreciating Learning
Children need to hear phonemes (the individual sounds in words)
Rhyming words and alliteration help develop awareness and connection with letters.
Bilingual (able to speak two languages) makes reading easier

7. Choosing Books Simple, colorful, interesting pictures Appealing story
Include action that will hold the child’s interest
Understand most words
Descriptive language
Short enough to read in one sitting

8. Introducing Art & Music
Art allows children to express their feelings, learn to their control body, and show creativity.
Children respond to rhythm, or music, and enjoy games and singing simple.

9. Reading & Writing Reading begins in different ways.
1. letters first and next letters with sound
2. recognize how letters fit to form certain words
3. First written word is his/her name.
4. Then a child develops a sight vocabulary.(recognized vocabulary)
