Species of the Week The Jaguar

Where do they live? Jaguars live in a variety of habitats including grasslands, forests, and swamplands. They live throughout central and south America, into the southwestern U.S.

What is their niche? They live in heavily forested tropical areas. Some jaguars live in savannahs and scrub. They eat wild pigs, fish, turtles, monkeys, deer, birds and even reptiles. They are solitary animals. They live in caves and canyons close to a source of fresh water. They have no real predator except for humans. They do not have rivals for food and territory.

What are their adaptations? Large paws Powerful jaws to crush their preys skull. Powerful limbs that can carry them for hundreds of miles searching for prey. They can climb trees and swim.

What is threatening the Jaguars survival? Habitat loss is the major threat. Human population growth has led to clearing of forests. Poaching also has serious consequences for this endangered species! They are being poached mainly for their coats. Illegal trade was a major threat to jaguar survival. They are also hunted by farmers.

Habitat Loss

What is being done to help? A treaty was passed to limit the export and trade of jaguars. Incentives to farmers who do not kill the cats on their land is being discussed. Zoos are attempting a captive breeding project.
