Structure of the Grade-Level Chapters Short discussion of learning in previous grade Four critical areas of instruction Standard or cluster of standards with a narrative that provides additional explanation Sample problems that further illustrate the standard Grade level explanations and examples for the Standards for Mathematical Practice Let’s look more closely at the structure of the grade-level chapters and things that should be pointed out to educators as they navigate through the document. The first thing we see in each grade level is a short discussion of instruction and learning that occurred in the previous grade level. As we all know, the grade level mathematics standards are a progression. It is vital that teachers know what came before their grade level and what comes after. It’s likely that most educators will first turn to the chapter for their grade level or the course they teach because it is most pertinent to their work; the brief explanation of the skills that students should be coming into their classrooms provides some context for their instructional planning. Next, we see a box that highlights the four critical areas of instruction for that grade level—in this case grade four. These critical areas come straight from the standards document, but the Mathematics Framework Committee members felt it was important to have these critical areas listed front and center in the chapter to focus instruction and learning on the grade-level standards.
