Common Core Presentation Neco Johnson EDU695: MAED Capstone (MRL1532A) Dr.: Kathleen Pierce-Friedman August 13, 2015

Common Core Presentation Explains the purpose of CCSS. The purpose of the CCSS is for students to learn within certain guidelines in the classroom. The CCSS is different learning material to make sure the students are learning what they need to master to complete a class/work. Teachers have to learn the CCSS and surround their lesson plans on this material. If a student is learning the information from the CCSS, the are headed in the right direction to mastering different skills. “The Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSS) is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). Grounded in evidence and research, and internationally benchmarked, these rigorous education standards establish a set of shared goals and expectations for what K–12 students should understand and be able to do in English language arts and mathematics in order to be prepared for success in college and the workplace.” www.udlcenter.org/implementation/udl_ccss

Common Core Presentation Explains how the CCSS are used within a school for teaching and learning. The teacher creates a lesson plan for the students and within those lesson plans she adds the CCSS. The teacher must teach this information to the students. Once the teacher teaches this information to her students in her lesson plan she will have the students do different activities to see if they are learning the material. Another thing the teacher will do is give the students tests about the information to see if they are mastering the required material of the CCSS. The CCSS is put into the teacher lesson plans to allow students to master the skills they need in school. “The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) represent the most significant, widespread education reform that has ever occurred in American public schools. Currently, 45 states and three territories have adopted the standards and plan to assess students’ progress on them during the 2014-2015 school year. With these standards, all learning is linked to 10 Career and College Readiness Standards, what students need to know and be able to do in order to thrive at the college level and in the career world.” www.edutopia.org/.../common-core-change-teaching-erin-powe...www.edutopia.org/.../common-core-change-teaching-erin-powe

Common Core Presentation Justifies why creating report cards based on the CCSS is important in the school or district I feel that as a teacher it is necessary to base the students report card on the CCSS. This will let the students know that it is serious for them to learn and master this material. If we do not hold the students accountable for learning this material they will not take it serious. In my opinion, by grading them on this and putting it on their report cards will make them understand that they must master these skills. As we know students do not like to have bad grades on their report card and especially having to take them home.

Common Core Presentation Summarizes your understanding of how embedding evidence-based assessment in the curriculum can help guide teachers and learners in decision making. “Embedded assessments, tasks within the context of instruction, can serve as important tools for improving teaching and learning. In this article, we report on the assessment design principles and a nine-step development model that guided the construction of innovative embedded assessments. Using multiple sources of data—expert reviews, a conceptual test blueprint, student interviews, focus group interviews, and student responses to assessments—we were able to analyze the extent to which our assessments align with research-based design principles. Specifically, our results demonstrate that the assessments: (a) align with learning and instructional goals; (b) are cognitively challenging; (c) support student learning; and (d) have reduced potential bias. These assessments were developed in the context of an introductory biochemistry course for nonbiochemistry majors with learning goals in areas of: scientific content, socio-scientific issues, and evidence-based decision making skills. The assessment design principles and development model are generalizable to other science disciplines. We discuss how the application of these design principles can generate valid and reliable embedded assessments that can be integrated into a modern classroom.” onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/bmb.../pdf

Common Core Standards Summarizes your understanding of how embedding evidence-based assessment in the curriculum can help guide teachers and learners in decision making. (Continue) From my understanding it not only helps the students learn and master information better but it helps the teachers as well comphrend better. Sometimes teachers are unsure about information and the CCSS helps them as well as it helps the students. I like to look at it as the teachers and students are mastering skills together. No I am not saying the teachers do not know the material but you will be surprise at the way teachers and students learn together. Yes it is very important for students to master the information just as well it is important for teachers to incorporate it in their lesson plans.
