Review Session Chapter 1 – Planet Earth

Size and shape of the earth

Evidence of Earth’s shape… Ships appear to sink as they go over the horizon.

Evidence of Earth’s shape… 2. Earth's shadow on the moon during an eclipse is always curved.

Evidence of Earth’s shape… 3. Different time zones.

Evidence of Earth’s shape… 4. Similarities in gravity at sea level all over Earth.

Evidence of Earth’s shape… 5. Different angles to Polaris as you travel N. or S. The altitude of Polaris is equal to your latitude on Earth.

Evidence of Earth’s shape… 6. Photos from space - best proof.

What is Earth’s true shape? Which means? What is Earth’s true shape? Earth’s true shape is a slightly oblate spheroid. Flattened at the polar regions. Bulging at the equatorial regions. Caused by Earth’s rotation (spinning on its axis).
