Terminology

Allegory: a narrative in which characters & settings stand for abstract ideas or moral qualities Alliteration: Repetition of the same or very similar consonant sounds – usually at the beginning of words that are close together Allusion: Reference to a statement, a person, a place, or an event from literature, history, religion, mythology, politics, sports, science, or pop culture

Imagery: Language that appeals to the senses (sight, touch, taste, hear, feel) Inference: A guess using known information Metaphor: Figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things, in which one thing is compared to another thing WITHOUT using like, as, than, or resembles

Word parts: Look at how the part is used in the new word. Consider the meaning of the new word to draw conclusions.
