Allusion – a reference to a person, place, or event from history, literature, sports, movies, or the arts Simile – a comparison of two unlike things using the words like or as Metaphor – a comparison of two unlike things by saying one thing is a dissimilar object or thing Personification – giving human qualities to nonhuman things. Hyperbole – an exaggeration that cannot possibly be true. Symbol – an object person, or place that has meaning in itself and that also stands for something larger that itself, usually an idea or concept; some concrete thing that represents an abstraction.
