Warm Up #7 Who were the first Europeans to establish a colony in what is now New York? a. Spanish b. French c. Dutch d. English People came to the British colonies for all of the following reasons except- a. Freedom of religion b. Economic gains c. New opportunities d. Start a new nation Write both questions, and your answer choice for each.

The First Two English Colonies Jamestown, Virginia Plymouth , Massachusetts

North America in 1607 England, France , and Holland were all jealous of Spain’s Glory, Gold, and Christian Missions. So they had to also make colonies ! Spain had colonized since 1492… a 115 year head start

England Failed to Catch Spain at First – Roanoke , North Carolina Vanished ! No Trace ! Where are they?

Jamestown, Virginia : 1st successful English Colony 1607 104 Men and Boys arrived. NO WOMEN ???? Only men came because the purpose of the colony was….. Economic, to make money, nobody planned to stay there ! They would find gold and return to England rich!

Jamestown, Virginia “Starving Time”1608 & 1609 Problems and Hardships faced by the Jamestown , Virginia Colonists… Bad location… swampy land with brackish water (salty mixed with fresh) 2. Indian wars after a few years 3. Disease , and starvation killed 2/3’s of colonists ! 4. Colonists were dumb… looked for gold and didn’t plant crops or build shelters well

John Smith Saves Jamestown: “He that shall not work, neither shall he eat” Forced Native Americans to trade food to the English ! Forced everybody to work for the colony to survive !

Economic Success at Jamestown John Rolfe discovered a way to grow a “hybrid” tobacco in Virginia in 1619 … this made a profit for the colony which was why it was begun 

Jamestown, Virginia’s government Land Owners were able to vote and elect representatives to the House of Burgesses The House of Burgesses’ job was to make laws for local government while obeying England’s laws passed for the nation. House of Burgesses 1619

Colonists Change Jamestown’s Physical Geography After Europeans docks were built by every tobacco farm for easy transportation ! Before Europeans just rivers no ports Plains near the coast Appalachian Mountains farther west Plains were made into farmland Mountain valleys were hunted for furs

Plymouth, Massachusetts 1620 (13 years after Jamestown ! ) Pilgrims left England to escape religious persecution from the political powers in England ( King) Pilgrims brought men , women , and children to Massachusetts !

Pilgrims were called “Separtists” Pilgrims were fined, inprisoned, tortured , and even put to death for being a different religion from their king…. So they asked the government to let them move to Virginia… they missed and were in Massachusetts !

Pilgrims wrote the Mayflower Compact to create local government In the name of God, Amen. We, whose names are underwritten, the loyal subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord King James, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King, defender of the Faith, etc. Having undertaken, for the Glory of God, ….. covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil body politic; … for our better ordering, and preservation and furtherance of the ends aforesaid; and by virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame, such just and equal laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions, and offices, … from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the general good of the colony; unto which we promise all due submission and obedience. In witness whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names at Cape Cod the 11th of November, in the year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord King James, of England, France, and Ireland, the eighteenth, and of Scotland the fifty-fourth, 1620.[12] Political Make local laws

Plymouth, Massachusetts Governor William Bradford led the Pilgrims at Plymouth, Massachusetts in church and government Massachusetts Bay Colony Governor John Winthrop led the Puritans in Politics and Religion

Puritans Seek Religious Freedom We are going to America b/c you are a cruel tyrant ! We want to PURIFY the church ! English King Charles I persecuted Puritans because they refused to follow his church : The Church of England Obey Me !

Native American Relations Jamestown, Virginia Plymouth, Massachusetts Pocohontas Kept peace between Indians and Virginians for a few years. When war came she sided with her English husband against her Indian people Squanto and Samoset Captured and later returned to America, Squanto spoke English and helped the Pilgrims plant crops and fish. They also kept peace for a few years until eventually war broke out.
