4 Guiding Questions When was the colony founded? Where is it located? Describe geography. Who were the founders/settlers? Who was the leader? Why was the colony founded? How was the colony governed? What, if any, hardships did the colony face? How did they survive? What special significance does the colony have in American history?

5 ROANOKE Founded: 1585 Geography: coast of North Carolina, coastal plain, good harbors Founders/settlers: Sir Walter Raleigh; Englishmen Leader: Sir Walter Raleigh Why founded: To find gold, riches; establish English presence in N. America How was the colony governed: no info on government Hardships/survival: Ran out of supplies, returned to England; war prevented them from returning for 3 years. All colonists had disappeared. Importance: First attempt of a colony, but FAILED. The LOST COLONY

6 JAMESTOWN (1607) Founded: 1607 Geography: Virginia; fertile soil, harbors, Coastal Plains, swampy land Climate: hot, humid summers, and mild winters, good for growing; Founders/settlers: merchants; gentlemen and craftsmen Leader: John Smith, John Rolfe Why founded: To find gold; send raw materials to England How was the colony governed: self-governing, House of Burgesses- first representative government in America Hardships/survival: Harsh winter, ran out of food, started trading with the Indians; planted tobacco (cash crop) Importance: First permanent English settlement in America; House of Burgesses

7 PLYMOUTH (1620) Founded: 1620 Geography: Plymouth, Mass, near Cape Cod., Coastal Plains, rocky, hilly wilderness, sandy coasts, forests Climate: Long, cold winters and mild summers Founders/settlers: William Bradford; Pilgrims (Separatists) Leader: William Bradford Why founded: To escape religious persecution from Anglican Church How was the colony governed: self-governing, Mayflower Compact Hardships/survival: Learned how to survive from the local Indians; First Thanksgiving Importance: Mayflower Compact- agreement to establish self- government in Plymouth

8 MASSACHUSETTS BAY Founded: 1630 Geography: Massachusetts Bay. Long, cold winters, rocky, hilly wilderness, Coastal Plains, sandy coasts near water Climate: bitter, cold winters, mild summers Founders/settlers: John Winthrop; Puritans wanted to purify Anglican Church Leader: John Winthrop Why founded: To escape religious persecution How was the colony governed: Using the rules of the Bible, self- governing Hardships/survival: lumbering, shipping, small farming. Hardships not known Importance: Religion influenced government

Draw a line from the 13 colonies map to the two (close-up) settlement maps to show where the settlements were located. Under each close-up map write why each settlement is historically important
