Elements of Class Stratification SEGMENT 1

Elements of Class Stratification Social Class- A large group of people who rank closely to one another in wealth, power, and prestige. Wealth – Value of a Person’s Assets minus Liabilities. Wealth consists of property and income Power – ability to get your way despite resistance. Power can be physical, social, institutional, and economic. Prestige – respect given to one’s occupation or social status

Elements of Class Stratification Two competing points of view of how people land in a particular social class: Characteristics of Individuals – people largely determine their own class standing through their willingness to work, intelligence, and attitudes. Social Structure – Your social status at birth combined with historical shifts in patterns of the social structure play a major contributing role in determining your social class position. Sociologists point to data that confirms that individual characteristics have only a minute effect in determination of class position of the individual.

Elements of Class Stratification Structural Mobility – a change in the social structure (changes to access to education or expansion of better paying occupations) that causes a large number of people to move either up or down the social class ladder Exchange Mobility – a change in the social structure that causes a larger number of people to move up and down the social class ladder at the same time.
