General Chemistry 1 CHEM 1411 Dr. Lorenz J Bauer lorenz.bauer@hccs.edu

Class Goals Introduce you to the role of chemistry in science and the world. Have all you succeed. Introduce you to the concepts and language of chemistry. Prepare you for further study Everyone should leave course with knowledge you can use.

Class Goals Introductions Why are you here What do you want from the course

Contact Information I can only communicate via HCCS email account. lorenz.bauer@hccs.edu I will send out e-mails and post announcement on the masteringchemistry course site.

What you will need 1)Chemistry the Central Science, 13th ed. by Theodore L. Brown, Student edition: 0-321-91041-9 / 978-0-321-91041-7. 2) Access to masteringchemistry course site. 3) Lab manual & Worksheets must be printed as needed from D2L, lab books will be used for reports. 3) Scientific Calculator 4) Goggles for Lab 5) Appropriate clothing: As this is a laboratory based course, students performing and experiment must wear the appropriate attire. Shoes must be closed-toe and heel. Skirts should be mid-calf length and shorts are PROHIBITED. Failure to wear the appropriate clothing for lab will result in your forfeiture of the experiment that day. On paper-based lab days, these requirements will be relaxed.

Late Assignments and Cell Phones Late Assignment: There will be NO makeup quizzes or labs. Lab reports and/or worksheets will NOT be accepted from students who did not attend the lab. Students may miss ONE labs without penalty. A grade of zero will be entered for each additional lab that is missed. Cell phones: No cell phones and other internet or cellular connected electronic devices should be used during class at all times.

Guidelines and Policies: Attendance to all classes is expected. Sign in and out. Missing more than 15 hrs of class, including late and and leaving early may lead to withdrawal from the class. Your success in this class is based on a cumulative understanding of the material. If, however you should miss a class, it is your responsibility to obtain lecture notes and assignments from another student.

Make-up Exams No make up exam will be given. If your final exam score is higher than your lowest semester exam score, the score of the final will replace the lowest exam score. If you miss an exam your final exam score will replace the zero for the missed exam. If you miss more than one exam, you will receive a zero for the second missed exam. The final exam is mandatory. Inform the instructor in advance, if you know you must miss an exam.

Text and Home Work Chemistry The Central Science- Brown et. al. 13th Edition Please read Chapters before class You must log into the online www.pearsonmastering.com website Assignments must be completed on line If you are interested in a problem let me know. We will discuss the problems in class.

Homework Homework is on the mastering chemistry website. There are tutorials and end of chapter questions Adaptive learning exercises are extra credit.

Free on-line Resources https://www.youtube.com/user/tdewitt451 http://www.chemteam.html https://www.khanacademy.org/science/chemistry Phone APPS There are a number of free or very reasonable phone APPS available that would help you study in your free time: Chempro, periodic table, eucalabs, virtual orbital 3D, goreact, Kahn Academy, chemnames.

Success Chemistry is difficult and test scores are often low I will adjust the grading scale as follows: 85% A 70% B 55% C Homework, lab and participation is 35% of the grades

Grades 1) Quizzes (n-1) Average 10% 2) Class participation 5% 3) Labs (n-1) Average 20% 4) 4 Exams 45% 5) Final (comprehensive) 20% Total 100%
