Three Types of Colonies Charter license from the King manage and govern themselves Mass. Bay, Virginia Proprietary owned by one person Pennsylvania, Maryland Royal controlled by the Crown ruled by Royal governor 10 of 13 at time of the Revolution (NC)

Maryland One of the Chesapeake Colonies (with Va.) Founded in 1634 by George Calvert (Lord Baltimore) as a haven for Catholics Toleration Act (1649)- first law to guarantee religious freedom

New York Settled in 1623 by the Dutch for trade with the Indians Explored and Verrazano & Henry Hudson called New Holland

A Trading Center Albany was the main trading center Main settlement at New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island Bought by Peter Minuit for $25 Very harsh treatment of Indians
