The Age of Exploration SS6H6: The student will analyze the impact of European exploration and colonization on various world regions

Enduring Understanding SS6H6 a. Identify the causes of European exploration and colonization; include religion, natural resources, a market for goods, and the contributions of Prince Henry the Navigator Enduring Understanding Movement/Migration: movement and migration of people and ideas affect all societies involved Essential Question: - What factors, including the contributions of Prince Henry the Navigator, influenced European nations to begin overseas exploration?

Prince Henry the Navigator 1394-1460 Royal prince from Portugal. Started the first school for oceanic navigation in 1418. Training in map-making, navigation, and science. Promoted Portuguese exploration along the west coast of Africa in order to help defeat Muslims in north Africa.

Prince Henry the Navigator 1394-1460 With the exploration of the African coast, the Portuguese brought back gold and ivory. The Portuguese also discovered that they were able to bring back slaves from Africa to work on sugar plantations in the Azores The explorations planned by Prince Henry were the catalyst for the African slave trade that lasted for 450 years. The slave trade was devastating to Africa and slowed progress on the continent during this time.

Exploration Route along the coast of Africa

New Technology New Technology also contributed to the Age of Exploration: - astrolabe: Europeans received this ancient Greek device from the Arabs. It could be used to find latitude. Very helpful when sailing in the open ocean.

New Technology - Compass: invented by the Chinese, helped find magnetic north. Before then, sailors used the sun and stars to find north. Not very helpful on cloudy days! - New Ships: ships called caravels were the newest and best model. Caravels had multiple triangular sails and a new type of rudder. This made the ships faster and more maneuverable than the old ships.
