Henry’s caravels first sailed the coast of West Africa
1441: returned with gold dust
1445: Went to Cape Verde (western point of Africa)
1460: Prince Henry died and did not reach southern Africa

8. Bartolomeu Dias
1488: became first European to sail around the southern tip of Africa
Named it “Cape of Storms”
Later renamed “Cape of Good Hope”

10. Vasco da Gama Set out to India with four ships
Went around Cape of Good Hope and stopped on the east coast of Africa
Reached Calicut, India in 1498
First European to reach Asia by sea

12. Effects of Explorers
Vasco da Gama’s voyage showed Europe a way to Asia without Silk Road
Portugal made huge profits from the new sea routes
