4 Even though Europeans were motivated to explore, how was it actually made possible?
The Age of Exploration lasted from the 1400’s to the early 1600’s. During this time Europeans explored the world by ocean in search of trading goods such as gold, silver, and spices.

European interest in the Far East. Europeans wanted “luxury goods” Silk, spices, porcelain. China India

The Crusades: A series of holy wars from 1100 to 1300 CE. Fought by Christians to take back the Holy Land from Muslims in the Middle East. It allows Europeans to become familiar with “luxury goods”

Maybe the Earth really isn’t flat??? The Renaissance: Means Rebirth. It is a rebirth of knowledge from ancient Rome and Greece. Europe becomes more interested in the scientific explanation of the world around them. People become more curious. KEY QUESTION: How did the Silk Road, Crusades, and Renaissance influence Europeans to explore the world?

8 New Technology Johan Gutenberg invented the Printing Press.
It allows books to be printed in mass. More Books = ideas spreading quickly Ideas spreading quickly = more people with knowledge More people with knowledge = more curiosity More curiosity = EXPLORATION!!!

9 New Technology Astrolabe: Navigation instrument that allowed sailors to determine latitude. Now I know where I’m going!

10 New Technology Compass:
Sailors could now accurately pinpoint direction even in bad weather. They didn’t have to rely on the Sun and Stars anymore.

11 New Technology The Caravel was a Portuguese ship designed to sail into the wind. Faster sailing More maneuverable Key Features: Triangle sails to change direction Lots of storage space for long voyages KEY QUESTION: How did the compass, astrolabe, and caravel increase confidence in sailing?

Directions: Over the past three days we have been discussing the events that have led up to European Exploration. In the space provided below you need to write a journal entry as a European Explorer in 1450 who is thinking about setting sail to discover the world. In your Journal you must write about the events in history and new technology that made this possible for you. You must also write about why you want to explore and what you hope to find. Your journal entry should be about two paragraphs long.
