Warm Up (Read page 56 and 57) Practice Essay: In an essay format (at least 3 paragraphs with an intro, body, and conclusion) describe a situation in which you were stressed. In the essay, identify what the “stressor” was and identify whether the stress you felt was eustress or distress. Also describe how the stress affected you and whether or not you overcame it. The four general types of stressors Major Life changes (moving, new school, graduation, Basic Training) Catastrophes (life was threatened or in danger, property damage, tornadoes, crime, terrorism, war) Everyday Problems Environmental problems (Temperature, noise volume, crowds)

Alarm Stage Adrenaline is released into blood Heart beats faster, breathing speeds up, muscles tense, attention narrows, pupils open wide, more energy produced by muscle cells, flow of blood to brain increases Fight or Flight response

Resistance Stage The body adapts to the continued presence of the stressor Alarm stage symptoms may disappear Uses up a lot of energy (you may become tired, irritable, or not be able to handle any more stress)

Exhaustion Stage Your body can no longer keep up with the demands placed on it Physical and emotional resources depleted Only occurs if you experience a stressor for a long time Can trigger illness or reduce the bodies ability to fight illness (headaches, asthma attack, high blood pressure, heart disease)
